-— the Cathars rejected the bureaucracy of the Roman Catholic Church and refused to worship in temples or cathedrals. The Cathars also believed that men and women were equalin Cathar communities, women often held important religious positions -—
They were a gnostic or proto-New Age cult that rejected marriage because they rejected the material world. The spread of their religion would have meant the literal end of society.

I have sometimes wondered if there is a secret society of socialists who run this country from behind the scenes.
Also had a professor who really did seem to be in the know about a lot of things. He believed in a Satanic society affiliated with voodoo etc. who controlled large parts of the world especially in Africa, and South America and their descendants who live in the U.S., Canada etc.

The Road to Eleusis: Unveiling the Secret of the Mysteries by R. Gordon Wasson. It was a retreat involving the ingestion of a secret fungus, and it was only allowed once. The fungus was Claviceps purpurea, a fungus with chemical constituents that if consumed without control would result in death. In controlled measure, the ergot fungus would give you fantastic hallucinations. FYI
