Björt Ólafsdóttir, a member of Iceland’s parliament, has posted a picture of her left breast online in order to “fight sexism” and “the patriarchy.”
In an editorial written by Ólafsdóttir, she explained that she did so because she is tired of the hypocrisy of “Facebook and Instagram, whose guidelines specifically target the female form.”
She explains that Facebook and Instagram allow men to show their nipples, and women should be able to do the same. The campaign she is championing is called “#FreeTheNipple.”
Ólafsdóttir was inspired to act by 17-year-old Adda Smaradottir, who took a topless photo of herself and posted it online. Ólafsdóttir took a picture of herself lifting her shirt, revealing her left breast. She then posted it to twitter with the caption, “This is to feed children. Shove it up your patriarchy. #FreeTheNipple.”
