Xin Tian Yong, a contributor for the Chicago Maroon, has declared that free speech needs to be curtailed if people disagree with it. Specifically, Yong believes that speech that he considers immoral or hateful should be banned, especially if he considers it hurtful to minority religious or race groups like Muslims or African Americans.
Yongs article, titled Actions speak louder than words, begins by talking about a writer for Charlie Hebdo speaking at the Universitys French Club.
Zineb El Rhazoui, the writer for Charlie Hebdo, defended both satire and free speech...
Yong writes that El Rhazoui spoke about the terrorist attack that killed several of her colleagues. Then, according to Yong, Muslim student Aseal Tineh, who he describes as brave, stood up to question El Rhazoui.
Saying she felt threatened by Charlie Hebdo and El Rhazoui, the student asked if she could condemn the attacks, but not say that she supports peoples right to free speech by saying, I am Charlie.
El Rhazoui responded by saying that if you support free speech, you must take the good with the bad. And if you die to defend freedom of speech, then you died for something worthwhile. You have to have the balls to die for ideas, El Rhazoui declared.
Yong slams this statement by El Rhazoui, saying that by saying this, she is actually against the free speech of others. By disagreeing, Yong explains, El Rhazoui was pushing offensive vitriol that infringes on peoples right to free speech.
...More than that, Yong continues, El Rhazoui is wrong in thinking that veils on Muslim women cannot be used as a symbol of empowerment.
...He also slams El Rhazoui for suggesting that Islam has ever inspired any terrorists or terrorist attacks. Islam does not produce criminals or terrorists."

First thing I thought of!!
This ChiCom immigrant can stuff his crap where the sun don’t shine.
It’s not even worth debating twisted thug “logic” like his.
Her very life is offensive to me. May I curtail it??????
What other groups might be offended?
Pray America is waking
If muslims can’t wrap their heads around the concept of free speech and individual rights, then that means that they picked the wrong country to immigrate to.
Maybe the muslims would feel more at home in the UK, europe, or the middle east, where people are too wimpy to recognize an invading army when they saw it.
If the muslims don’t like they way we do things here in the US, well that is just too damn bad.
Doesn’t this yong fool understands that moozlums are perpetually offended? That you exist and that you are not a craven moozlum is enough to offend them. Well...I am offended by any who become so readily offended. yong offends me with his confused, illogical blather.
They’ll get the Trotsky treatment.
Note the difference in the following two statements:
Saying she felt threatened by Charlie Hebdo and El Rhazoui, the student asked if she could condemn the attacks, but not say that she supports peoples right to free speech by saying, I am Charlie.
But here is the line from the student's article that that sentence was supposedly summarizing:
During the Q&A session on Thursday, a Muslim student Aseal Tineh claimed to feel threatened and asked whether she could condemn the Charlie Hebdo killings without saying I am Charlie.
Did you notice anything? The summary is actually longer than the original. Why would that be? Why not just quote the original if it's more concise?
The "Pundit Press" author is making exactly the same mistake that the students at the University of Chicago are making, getting confused between agreeing with people and supporting their right to free speech.
The Maroon? This isn’t a satire? Has no-one in Chicago heard of Bugs Bunny? As in “What a maroon!”?
They could always get the hell out of our country if they don’t like it.
The good news is the comments in the original Chicago Maroon article, which are (all five of them) completely dismissive of the ridiculous position taken by the author. What a bunch of wussies our country is raising that everybody is running around talking about the “need” for a “safe space” in which to hold or express opinions, which safe space is apparently a space in which nobody is allowed to disagree with me about anything I think is important. The absurdity of this, and the ease with which it can be transformed into ending any one individual’s right to say anything, is so obvious that it’s hard to understand how anyone could not realize this. What a bunch of cowards.
Thanks for the wisdom of Bugs Bunny. I had forgotten that “maroon” is an alternate spelling of “moron”.
I’m offended by rap lyrics.
But I also grew up in an era where if something was offensive you just ignored it and got on with life.
This Yong person should ignored too
.
Well, I’m offended by Muslims. So?
quite typical of libs.
they do not like what you have to say and want to make your speech illegal.
Hey moosie turds, F-you and your gutter religion.
Hey libs, you may not like it but it is guaranteed in our constitution just as some of your all crap is.
Just say you find the cartoon offensive and demand that she remove it...
“Sticks and stones will break my bones, but words will never hurt me” must not be taught to kids anymore.
