and the music was better, too:
And note Whitney, Sade, et. al. sporting cross necklaces...
what a difference 30 yrs can make for an imploding culture:

Whitney Houston was quite a beautiful woman in the days before she got sucked into the Bobby Brown whirlpool of drugs and self-destruction.

In the mid 80s, I thought Whitney Houston was one of the most beautiful women in the world... never seen a smile like that (tho my wife is close!)
First time she went on Letterman, I remember being mesmerized

Patrice Rushen, Starleana Young, Mary Davis...black music early mid 80s was alien to what is now considered music today.
And the audience at concerts back then were well dressed and respectful.

Whitney was always a bit "poppy" for my tastes. But man, what a beautiful woman and voice. Always liked En Vogue. Good groove. Don't know about their individual personal agandas, but that's OK. Same with Sade. Ooohh la la!
And yes, they severely outclassed this current crop of nasty kids. Although far from perfect, the 80's and 90's were in general the best of times for race relations IMO. We were this close to gettin the mix done proper. Then along comes Obummer. d:^)

All these women of the past will be derided as “acting white” and abandoned the today’s black culture.

My favorite black singing groups from roughly the same era:
Contrast their class, elegance and the quality of their music to any rap or hip-hop group today with their bling and profanity-laced lyrics.

Her death depressed me more than any celebrity in years- somehow she always represented the sunny, optimistic 80s somehow
Such a waste
That Bobby Brown really must be a black hole- now with the daughter, what a mess

I’m into the Platters too...

Her first album, Greatest Love of All, etc was not poppy to me- quality ballads all the way
But 3rd album or so the record company had her doing shallow junk like ‘Love Somebody’- know what you mean there

Have some Dorothy Dandridge to wash that skank out of your mind.

Love Sade's music. She's a pure class act.
