What Do You Prep For?
Market-Ticker ^ | 3/14/15 | Karl Denninger

One of the more-interesting discussions I've had over the years on a fairly consistent basis deals with the premise of prepping -- usually initiated by someone who's talking about a bug-out location, firearms, (freeze-dried or home-grown) food or (usually) all of the above.

Let's dissect this a bit, because the word prepping or prepper describe a lot of different things -- and frankly, the more I hear about some of them the more I nod in approval at some, while smirking at others. I think it's time we have this discussion, particularly given the rather-precarious nature of our global economy (driven almost-entirely by government attempts to protect certain powerful people and institutions.)

Underlying all of this is a problem that I and others have recognized for a long time: Humans do notoriously poorly at analyzing "tail risks" and acting appropriately in the face of them. I'll just put one example out there -- the Jews during WWII. Hitler's soldiers frequently came into a town with a few dozen men armed with machine guns and rounded up thousands of people, marching them into waiting boxcars.

The decision point to either riot or get into the boxcar happened right then and there, and was irrevocable.

I agree with Johnny, being right with Him is #1 around here. You can have the food stored and house prepped for emergency. That is all prudent, like having oil in your lamps. Or enough ammo. Fact is, it’s a way of life around here and has been for about 30 years. That’s why I could never live in the city. Left Chicago over 40 years ago and never looked back.

"You want to locate in a red or purple state in the reddest county you can find, in a rural setting far from any urban areas or projects."

- And there it is...I have 10-12 years to retirement and doing my homework to find such a place right now. Instead of going on beach or cruise vacations, we're traveling south and getting the feel for a few spots. Welcome any and all suggestions for spots to consider.

Actually - a lot of the locals rounded up the jews and stole their property. Class enevy and division by politicians taken to its logical conclusion.

It's scary to watch the class envy and division of the antisemitic left today. Many of them hate Jews and the rest are following because they get free stuff. America is not immune from the mistakes Germany made 80 years ago; human nature has not changed. If our country follows that path, I will be on the side of good, although that may not be the winning side.

My prep plan includes being ready for the likely events that have happened several times in the last couple decades. I could be snowed in with no power for weeks (it's happened twice in the last two decades, and it was annoying but no worse than that). I could have to deal with a black swan event, something I've never seen and didn't specifically plan for. Either way, if we're alive, I'm ready.

We have food, access to water, heat, light, hygiene and antibiotics, and entertainment to last a minimum of two years before we even have to grow crops. We wouldn't sit around that long, but we could. Neighbors? I know which neighbors are decent people and which ones are Obama-supporting parasites. I will trade and coordinate with those who are worth working with. Self-defense? I suspect we're good there too, even if there is no access to outside ammo or gunpowder. My plan is to be self-sufficient at home for two years if necessary.

After that (and hopefully much sooner), civilization will be on the way back even after the worst disaster Obama and his followers could imagine inflicting on our country, or after the worst natural disaster imaginable. I wonder what our next government will be like, if we go through TEOTWAWKI. My guess is that we'll start with local governments similar to village/shire, then Greek city/state, and move quickly to the US Constitution again, but interpreting it literally. "The right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed - and we mean it!" "Federal powers are limited to the Enumerated Powers - and we mean it!" etc. I would hope that churches will coordinate charity, and the federal and local governments will see that as outside their responsibility. No welfare that is linked to an entitlement mentality, just defense, preventing violent crime, protecting property rights, coining money (silver/gold), and other appropriate roles.

Please don’t overlook prepping some barter items. A huge barter market will develop. A few choice items will get you something you or a loved one needs.

Check the Congressional district you are interested in on Wikipedia or the like; demographics, % rural to city, how many democrats.

I live in PA Congressional district 9, 50 miles from Pittsburgh, 300 miles from Filthadelphia.

“Congressmen are the ultimate preppers. “

That is something people don’t seem to realize: Congress has multiple underground bunkers built by them and only for them. They get to screw around with world politics then have a place to run to, yet, they decry We the People prepping as “lunatics”.

I have, as far back as I can remember, always prepped for the unknown. The mega thrust earthquake has been on my list since I first heard of it. When Obama was elected, that was a bigger deal for prepping than anything. Obama’s election meant that a lot of my fellow Americans were ignorant or evil and not to be counted on.

I think that we are fast approaching a time when main will find themselves agreeing with Charley Waite: "Well you may not know this, but there's things that gnaw at a man worse than dying." Open Range (2003)

I prefer to agree with Trooper M. Padgett: "You may find me one day dead in a ditch somewhere. But by God, you'll find me in a pile of brass."~~ Tpr. M. Padgett

See the following. Can't quote the page number off the top of my head, but the author deals very neatly with such post-troubles polities.

That's what brick/concrete walls are for. Tip: use the corner rather than the wall face, so that the ricochets go to the sides.
