The U.S. Military Announces A Search For The Next Service Pistol
After 30 years in service with American troops, give or take a few months, the U.S. Military announced formally that it intends to replace the 9mm Beretta M9 pistol with a new Modular Handgun System (MHS) that will address many shortcomings of the generally unpopular M9.
Older readers will recall scratching their head in confusion when the M9 was first adopted in 1985, replacing the .45 ACP M1911 and M1911A1 pistols that had served as the standard sidearm of American soldiers from the Philippine Insurrection through most of the Cold War. The Beretta 92 what would become the military M9 was one of the best 9mm pistols around in the mid-1980s. The rest of M9 story here.
They all came with the magazine safety as far as I know, The one on mine was removed post purchase, intentionally, ( wow, am I going to hear blowback on that).
My Hungarian HP had the magazine safety which I immediately removed. My BHP is too valuable to shoot, but I will if my life was on the line.
There’s a reason that ammo is primarily intended for use in a high-capacity full-auto bullpup. Only reason to carry a Five-seveN is to fight your way back to the FN P90 you had no reason to put down.
Active Duty ping.
I have a PS-90, I don't have a Five-seveN.
My comment should be read with the thought needs more gun-porn
ringing in the back of your head.
;)
To each his own, my friend - it’s a high-quality, accurate pistol.
Me, I’m Old School: wood and steel baby! If somebody made me carry a 9mm, I’d pick a nice P08 Luger - maybe an American Eagle Commercial with the grip safety. Self-defense doesn’t have to boring..!
Gentlemen: I know the removing the magazine safety improves the trigger pull with the Browning but it’s a great feature to keep.
Back when I deployed a lot with the wife left home with two kids, the Browning was the House Gun. I trained her with it extensively and we kept it on top of the refrigerator, round in the chamber, hammer cocked and magazine out. Safe and inert as an iron, if the kids got a hold of it. My wife kept the magazine on her - all she had to do was insert it and fire. Fast and easy.
The Browning Hi-Power is also the only handgun that I know of where you can chamber a round one-handed by pushing the muzzle against a table or a door frame.
—always amused by this European “toy” , chambered for a rimless cartridge with slightly lesser ballistics than the near 90 year old .22 Hornet-—
To be fair, it [the P-90] is great at what it was designed to be: a rifle for tankers (and logistics/rear-echelon personnel, IIRC).
It's small/compact, easy to clean, and easy to maintain.
(The small/compact nature also makes it suitable for CQB like room-/building-clearing.)
Standard 1911’s are pretty reliable but I have seen many failures over the years.
And the .45 is a good round but many people have been shot repeatedly with .45, in the torso, who didn’t go down.
I think we should run tests on gitmo detainees using .45 and .40 ball and see how much difference in ‘stopping power’ there is. You can stuff far more rounds of .40 in a mag than .45 cal and I would personally trade a bit of ‘stopping power’ for many more rounds.
To me - stopping power is severing the spine at the base of the skull anyway.
—agree—I felt about 50 years ago the the bullpup style would be great in military rifles—
Yes, this is a military problem with 9mm not a civilian one. There are plenty of 9mm rounds that will perform and one still be able to carry more rounds. Unless civilian carry will be ruled by NATO agreements, 9mm has the best of both worlds.
I think that the standard government-issued 1911A1 with ball ammo is the most reliable weapon system ever made. I’ve seen ‘em covered with scale rust, mud, and more and always function.
I have only seen five people hit by .45s but they all died.
Get an updated 1911 and be done with it.

Actually, a lot of aircrew and special warfare in the Navy carry the Sig P228, aka M11. It's also 9mm but a damn fine pistol.
No blowback from me.
I can’t stand mag safeties.
They need a 10mm automatic. With the capacity of the 9mm and the terminal energy of the .41 magnum, it’s hard to find a better combat cartridge, but they’ll pick another underpowered POS.
