I'm not renewing my paid subscription to AVG as it gets more worthless every year.

I was going to use it two weeks ago. Read many bad reports online about it. It’s all just advertising, according to personal reports.

Instead, I used Kim Komando’s site. http://www.komando.com/downloads/1078/best-free-spyware-and-adware-removal-tool/all

This is it, maybe others can vouch for it. Supposed to be excellent but I ended up having to do recovery and wipe out my whole system anyway due to a virus sent to me.

I will second the ZoneAlarm Extreme. It is worth every penny.

Coupled with Spybot Search & Destroy you will have as close to perfect protection as you could want.

Malwarebytes has saved our rears a couple of times as a particularly nasty ‘hostage virus ‘ hit our machines.

SystemMechanic is a great overall system repair software, cheaper than the ‘as seen on TV’ stuff.

Protection is something found in a drug store, not on one’s computer.

I run frequent scans for spyware and malware with super anti spyware blaster and malwarebytes. I run regular quick scans with avast and do a boot scan with avast a couple of times a month. Some of the sites I troll are enemy territory and will bite you if you aren't careful. I've got too much time on my hands, can't resist jerking liberal chains, lt’s like going to the zoo and aggravating the howler monkeys.

Going on 26 years with various Macs - Trouble free.

Have you guys ever noticed that pointing out to PC owners the enormous advantages of switching to a Mac is like trying to teach a pig to sing? It never seems to work and just annoys the pig.

I’m glad to see at least one other person here doesn’t simply trash Microsoft. I’ve tried a number of different anti-virus systems over the years, and I’ve had the least amount of trouble from Microsoft. It’s worth noting, though, that “Windows Defender” is not a complete anti-virus system, per the Microsoft website. Microsoft Security Essentials is a complete system. I also run Malware Bytes a couple of times a year, just in case. I don’t recall it catching anything, though for quite a while.

What PC users hear from the MacNCrap users is snort, snort, snort, squeeeel! Get a real computer instead of the flashy, and expensive eye-candy.

Macs are no more secure than any other PC, just a small base of users who until recently didn’t raise enough interest in the spammer/hackers.

The greatness of Macs is myth and propaganda, but it’s all your choice so enjoy that Mac.

PC-matic is crapware. There are plenty of questionable sites that when accessed will download PC-Matic and a lot of other malware that is difficult to be rid of.

Well after reading through this thread, I'm slightly surprised at the vitriol towards PCMatic. I am tasked with taking care of three computers in the Philippines, and that includes setting up anti virus and other security software. I got five 'evergreen' licenses for PCMatic for $49.99 one time, that lasts forever. I don't know how long 'forever' is but it's been three years with no hiccups so far. In my experience it works well, with good antivirus and registry clean up. Trying to keep up with these three computers from 12,000 miles away is a pain, and using PCMatic has made it easier. They are very responsive to complaints or questions, and their customer service folks bend over backwards to address any concerns.

The Philippines is a high threat region especially when kids are using the computers to download every 'free' game that comes down the pike. PCMatic works better than Norton that I used to use.

YMMV

Really!! I never noticed ... but then the diehard PC guys always come back to games ... and then there is the-handcrafted-machine-put-together-for-half-the-price-and-twice-the-performance - funny how they never mention how long it took them to build it or how much they had to spend on “protection.” Or how much down time it takes them to reinstall the OS after the blue screen of death and fix their registry problems ...

Then there is: “A windows PC is a professional computer” bit, followed by: “Macs are toys” bit. But then these are the same guys that insist that being able to play games is what defines them, while we lowly “toy” computer users busily crank out projects in Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Filemaker, Lightroom, etc. So who had the “professional” computer and who has the “toy” again?

Mac guys worry about color balance and font usage, while PC guys, hardly knowing one font from another, are deep into playing the latest game at the highest frame rate and highest resolution, using the latest cheat sheet to win ...

So who is truly annoyed here?

Say what you will about Linux, but I haven’t spent a dime in years for antivirus and utility software. That money stays in my pocket. Nor do I worry about administering 3 or 4 programs to keep the system cleaned up. The same hardware than ran Windows runs Linux much faster without the security overhead. I’ve never had any virus or malware problems, either.

I hope you are perfectly satisfied with your OS, I certainly am with mine!
