New level of Fox News dominance demands analysis, not dismissal

Any day now, I am expecting to turn on the tube and see an ad that says, “More Americans get their TV news from Fox than anywhere else.”.

Whether that pleases or horrifies you, it’s time to think seriously about what that says about Fox, CNN, MSNBC, the state of network news today and the role TV plays or doesn’t play in providing us with reliable, trustworthy information.

Much of the media establishment seems bent on ignoring the incredible ratings success of Fox News. Or, maybe it’s just that Fox has pounded CNN and MSNBC in the ratings for so long that another victory doesn’t seem like “news” – especially with MSNBC imploding and CNN committing to any genre but news in an effort to find new audiences.

Good point, i too wonder why they decided that the West Coast evening viewers deserved repeats for hours.

Had to go to CNN. Had to take a shower. Still a little stench in my hair...

i can’t assume WHY Fox did not even show the ‘normal’ repeats of Hannity, etc. either, butt just the same dam hour over and over and over... while Fergadishu still burned... my take? getting FAT and LAZY

The correct comparison is not Fox News -vs- any one of the others, but fox news -vs- all of them since they all present the same viewpoint.

I tried to watch it last night and I just didn’t like the coverage. I don’t care for hannity’s drama. CNN wasn’t better. But I did enjoy watching Cuomo and Don Lemon running around like scarlet cats saying they were getting tear gassed...and then coming right back on the air.

If they were hit with tear gas, they would not be standing around. They would be choking and rolling around on the ground.

It is face time that counts, especially since FOX enjoys a certain prestige. It is getting the leftist message "out there." Assuming you personally are smart enough to pierce the left wing sophistry most people are not. FOX management knows what they are doing and that doing is leftward. I watch FOX but with a great deal of skepticism.

Actually, the media ( first the press, then radio) was always biased. And they were proud of that bias. In many communities the newspapers were the mouth pieces of the local power base. As the modes of media became more national, things started getting more “mainstream.”

The concept of a fair and unbiased media is a relatively recent thing—since the introduction of national media. You don’t make money pissing off half of your viewership.

I really chuckle sometimes when the sheeple complain about the media as if there is some constitutional basis for being fair. It’s exactly the opposite.

Most people in the U.S. are so poorly educated they have no idea about history, and they are force fed such crap I am amazed that they can function.

I don’t think the left wing sophistry is easily argued because it’s more like a religious zeal rather than reality.

I watch Fox, only because there’s nothing better, other than Sun News in Canada.

I’ve always believed that if NBC had brains instead of bias, they could take a big bite out of Fox by just flipping CNBC into a news source that is more Conservative than Fox.

I agree with you. To put it another way FOX is the best of a bad lot.
