Most voters in Tennessee pay no income or payroll taxes. Next month, they will decide whether they want that to remain that way.
A state ballot referendum, Amendment 3, would write prohibitions of both income and payroll taxes into the state constitution, pushed by anti-tax advocates who are worried about previous government efforts to add an income tax.
For the foreseeable future, there is little chance of either tax being added in the Volunteer State. The Republicans control both the statehouse and the governor's mansion, and no one expects them to endorse either levy.
Nevertheless, anti-tax advocates are concerned that attitude may not last and have pushed to make it nearly impossible for any future administration to enact the taxes.

The left is lying and telling the voters that a Yes on 3 will raise the taxes on food. And the useful idiots are buying it.
and TN has plenty of those....
P.S. If the state Supreme Court could be trusted, a state income tax would be declared unconstitutional AGAIN like it has been done THREE times in the 19th and 20th centuries. This amendment takes the supreme court out of the picture with plain language prohibiting an income tax.
They can push to eliminate the potential for income taxes. Any law is only as good as the next election cycle—laws are fungible. We have already been lead to believe our rights are fungible—not God-given but “allowed” by the rats. Our “rulers”, Obama actually said he and his rat regime was going to beady to “rule” from day one.
FU Obamatullah, I am ruled by no one, it is against the law.
You’ll find out if my prayers come true and you are perp-marched out of the White Hut in manacles and a pink jump-suit.
Rats breed copiously, they scurry about in the dark conrers and recesses, they spoil food and sicken people with their diseases, rats are vectors in that respect.
Now, if anyone has anything remaining of the zeal and patriotism that birthed the US, they will crawl through fire and shards of broken glass, swim through lakes of acid to reach the voting booth to eliminate all the rats in November 2014 and 2016.
Or not. “Bring out your dead” will come to a community near you soon. Oh, it already has...
Sales tax on food & everything else in TN is 9 3/4%.
Mixed feelings on state income tax, since Tennessee also has `TennCare’, a supplement to Medicaid, & that costs a lot, too.
Do it now before any more Rust Belt Democrats move there.
They have to fight this least it spread to the other states and We the People get empowered!
Whatever.
Taxes are either direct or built into a business transaction
Yes on Amendments 1 & 3.
The state income tax will be used to shift the burden of taxes to the already overtaxed middle class.
