After a lifetime of antibiotic use due to issues that had to be corrected surgically, my mother, daughter, and I had the worst intestinal problems. My daughter began her life with two straight years of antibiotics and has never had normal bowel function. I did great until I got hit with chronic sinus infections in my late 20's and my belly hasn't been the same since. Any hope of recovery was destroyed by yet another round and then another, and so on.
I know that a healthy gut flora is necessary for immunity, so we find ourselves trapped in a nasty cycle or more allergies, more sinus infections, more throat infections, more antibiotics, increasingly worse IBS, intolerances to more foods, etc.
Worse, good bacteria actually produce vitamins for us (Thiamine, Riboflavin, Pantothenic Acid, Pyroxidine, Biotin, Folic Acid, Cobalamin) and, just by coincidence, there are a few of these that we are chronically low on, even with supplements. (Especially Thiamine. Nobody can get their Thiamine levels to normal. Even the teetotalers and the kids. One of our doctors is getting very alarmed by this.)
We all need to repopulate, but all of the store-bought stuff will only give you about 4 species. There are supposed to be closer to 400 species in a healthy gut. The regular stuff does not work. (And we've tried. Lord, how we've tried)
I'm looking for *the* *best* probiotics out there. I mean something with at least 100 species that doesn't arrive in the mail DOA.
I'm the guinea pig. First a week of colostrum, digestive enzymes, and L-Glutamine, followed by a week of the bacteria.
If anyone has any other suggestions, please add it to the list! We've got to fix this problem once and for all.
I'm so desperate that I'm considering Helminthic therapy and I wouldn't say 'no' to a fecal transplant. (I'll do ANYTHING at this point!)
A good yogurt with live cultures. I like whole fat yogurts, because they have less sugar. Get a good, whole milk, sugar free yogurt and add your fruit and splenda. Less sugar, more fat.
Get outside. Work with your hands. Get dirty, it cleans up. I really think we need more exposure. God Bless.

Go to a health food store and buy a bottle of probiotic capsules — at least 30 billion per capsule. Keep the bottle in your refrigerator. I’ve used a couple of different brands, don’t remember their names, but they were both effective.
Sauerkraut...make your own, ready in a week or two.
Have you considered the GAP diet?

I’m not an expert but after reading about Hashimoto’s Thyroid which I have . . and the affects of “leaky gut” . . . you might want to take a look at the descriptions and reviews of these two items below:
I added Kefir by Lifeway to my smoothies . . . a few times per week instead of using 50% less sugar OJ or Almond Milk. I get the plain since I’m adding my protein powder and frozen berries.
and bought some Heather’s Tummy Fiber that has some prebiotics and other benefits.
I had been struggling to lose 10-15 pounds the last couple of years . . . with my Hashimoto’s and was finally able to get to my ideal weight this summer so maybe it helped “heal” my gut . . . maybe it didn’t.
Vitamin shoppe products work well for my wife

Try a Google search on ‘solaray probiotics’.

There are several different formulations.
I just started taking their Multidophilus-12 a couple of weeks ago. Their capsules require refrigeration and have an enteric coating to help allow passage through the stomach acids.
Also, Garden of Life Pro Defense Ultra for HSO's
Bubbe's saurkraut or any homemade lacto-fermented kraut (Not vinegar based)
Lifeway Kefir (plain)
Good luck
I positive that we’re talking ‘leaky gut’ here. I *know* my son has it. (diagnosed - he’s got his own story) I never had an allergy or a food problem in my life until my 30’s. Two years ago I had a massive surgery. In the month of preparation, I was put on three different antibiotics and antifungals to completely strip my system. For the week in the hospital, more antibiotics - this time IV.
Since then, my problem has gotten so much worse.
Do you drink milk? If so, getting some good kefir grains can give you a great, natural, daily dose of probiotics.
My wife says Pro-X10 by Biotrust works well. I never use the stuff but she says our SIL, who has problems since his tours in Iraq, has been helped a lot.
Check out Dr. Ohhira’s Probiotic Formula
It is live cultures made from no milk, eggs, or fish.
Fermented for 3 years using 12 strains of lactic acid cultures.
It is a complete blend of prebiotics, enzymes, micronutrients, and organic acids to bring about nutrient absorption, metabolism and immune response.
Sold at Whole Foods Markets
I second that except for the Splenda. Use honey -- local if you can get it -- instead. Berries, honey, and whole fat (not low fat) yogurt are delicious and healthy. Though I believe you could take a probiotic too. That might be a good idea. Sorry I don't have a brand name to suggest.
NEVER allow the Dr. to prescribe oral antibiotics.
Take the shot and at least keep the drugs from directly killing your beneficial gut bugs.
I prefer Caprylic acid over Acidophilous for probiotics but both help.
Black Currant Seed oil capsules every day help keep bad stuff out of your gut and things moving nicely. Essential fatty acids are extremely important.
R-fraction Alpha-lipoic acid and Glutathione are strong anti oxidants. Better for me than CoQ10.
And if you think I am a kook already(?), I make and drink my own Colloidal Silver for over 14 years now.
