Black University Student Leaders Form New Coalition For Racial Equality

The explosive wave of reactions to the fatal shooting of unarmed teen Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri hasn’t lost its momentum just yet.

Black student leaders have come together in support of racial equality with the formation of a multi-university group, the Black Ivy Coalition.

The coalition dedicated to social change is comprised of members from all eight Ivy League institutions, with plans to gain student memberships from colleges across the nation, and was officiated with the release of a statement summarizing their motivations and ambitions (see full text below). Their tagline? “It is now time for our generation to lead the movement against injustices toward people of color in the 21st Century.”

"We decided that our plan of action would be to create a network of black student leaders nationally to organize joint protests, legislative advocacy, and to also reach out to community organizers in communities like Ferguson so we can be more effective allies and campus advocates," Denzel Cummings, UMOJA Co-Chair and University of Pennsylvania senior told The Huffington Post. "We felt this was important in creating a revival of collegiate advocacy."

The revival Cummings mentions draws on the coalition’s inspiration from young leadership during the Civil Rights Movement such as the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee and The Greensboro Four, both which received nods in the group’s official statement.

The Black Ivy Coalition’s formation is rooted in long term frustrations with inequality, but not coincidently, immediately followed a series of deaths of unarmed black men whose locations across the country varied, but whose time proximities to each other did not: Eric Garner, Michael Brown, and Ezell Ford....

I had exactly the same observations while spending a month in Ghana.
There is no place on earth in which black people are as free and prosperous as they are in the US. Certainly no place in Africa.

GHANA? Oh my.
Yes, American blacks KNOW, I think, that Africa is ONLY a place to be FROM a long, long time ago. The stupids who rant and rave against the USA are just angry, frustrated and out to make everyone else as miserable as they are. Those stupids exist in every culture, race and faith.
They ALL find SOME reason to whine. That is who they are.

How wonderful to have been able to travel all over the world like that.
The only place I’ve been is across the border to Nuevo Laredo to look around and shop. (Needless to say, I’ll never do That again)

Racial equality = “we refuse to assimilate and demand that you recognize our thug, drug, and loot culture to be as good as yours.”

No, you are correct. US and Mexico border towns generally are pretty horrible. They don't have to be but Mexico cares more for getting Yanqui dollars than caring for its own land.

It's a sad, but true commentary on Mexico and Mexico is considered the "Giant of the north" by ALL its southern neighbors. Makes you SHUDDER to think how badly off THEY are if Mexico appears so prosperous to them.

Yes, all the travel was absolutely fabulous. Now, even though my dear sweet husband is gone, I am going to see my own USA!

"The explosive wave of reactions to the fatal shooting of unarmed teen Michael Brown in Ferguson..."

should say:

"The explosive wave of irrational black violence and increased black hatred of white people to the fatal shooting of violent black criminal Michael Brown in Ferguson...

"They already have equality. What they want is an advantage"

When someone says they want "equality" they really mean is they want "dominance".

Just imagine what would happen if that ever came to pass.

I look at my young daughter and shudder.

"Many moons ago, I was at San Francisco State University...

Me too!

Class of 97, I think. Finally someone in this world who knows the pain and suffering I went through.

If a person ever wanted to antagonize leftists, SFSU would be termed a Target-Rich Environment.

BTW, did you ever have a professor named DiCecco? Memories of his class are seared into my memory, and not in a good way! I tell people what went on in that class ("Variations of Human Sexuality"), and no one believes me; they think I am making it up, such was the level of depravity.
