Excellent essay, and written without the stuffy air of academia. A keeper for reference.
I was not sentenced, but I had to take the tests a few times over. It was some years ago, after retirement, when I took a beer-money job on the night shift at Wal-Mart. They had a series of surveys/tests you had to take within a certain amount of time.
One was on sexual harassment. They gave a set of scenarios and jokes and asked how I would respond. I failed the damned test three times and for the life of me, could not see where I was wrong, as the "blonde" type of jokes were really funny. Same with the scenarios. I finally limped across home base with the minimum passing grade the fourth time. I thought it freaking hilarious that I was so out of touch with the current management thinking. Surprisingly, no one ever said anything.
I had to take an ethic’s course and pass it. One of the questions was, “A foreigner gives you a gift worth more than $50, what do you do?” The correct answer was return it. Wow! Depending on the culture that could be a relationship ending event. You never want to embarrass somebody. So I answered, return it. But I’d simply have quietly informed by boss, providing I had a relationship where I could trust him. Otherwise, I’d have just ignored the requirement. What matters is what I understood about the culture of the person giving the gift. There’s a huge difference between, say, $200 theater tickets and a night out with a prostitute. (A program manager I worked for kept a black book of all the favor’s he’d done. They included drugs, hookers and bailing customers out of jail.)
Obviously, in the 20th century where there's discontent or potential for disruption you'd find socialists or Marxists or communists or fascists, so clearly if you look at grievance movements (racial minorities, feminists, gay activists) you'll find leftists involved in the early stages.
The phrase "political correctness" was used by Communists in the 30s and by the New Left in the 60s before it was popularized by leftists, feminists, gay activists in the 1980s. You certainly could say that the word has a history involving Marxists.
But European Marxists didn't develop what we now call "political correctness." That was something Americans came up with and the connection to Adorno or Horkheimer is pretty tenuous. It's like blaming the philosophes for the French Revolution or Nietzsche for Nazism. There are intellectual connections, but they aren't as direct as some people suppose.
Lind seems to think that if he applies the phrase "cultural Marxism" to political correctness often enough and loudly enough, political correctness will just go away, and that won't happen. There are real political interests involved that don't derive from European theorists.
Finally, if the phrase "political correctness" has a dubious ideological history, so does the phrase "cultural Marxism" (Kulturbolshewismus). It's not really something one should throw around as freely and as naively as Lind does.
Lind's article is well worth the read especially if you have kids approaching college age. I ran across it about 15 years ago. He's also written some essays on the coming next civil war which will put ethnic groups against each other.
Lind used to co-host a TV show called The Next Revolution with Brad Keena {Janet Parshalls brother IIRC} and they would get into some real good discussions.
To answer your question it came from Marxist which Columbia University invited here in the 1930's after Hitler booted them from Germany. They came here to take over our government via our education system. Read it. It's a good article and he gives good details.
At the time I laughed seeing how a Marxist, of all people, was calling for the suppression of "hate speech" (what else to they engage in?), and the implications for free speech. I am not laughing now.
PC was becoming prevailent in the military even in the 1970's. If your evaluations didn't contain supporting certain PC programs it was a black mark.
Remember when PC stood for Personal Computer?
Because of PC and other leftist influences, the left owns this culture now. With so much fail going on these days, I can only hope, the American people that were indoctrinated in to this culture, starts seeing what they were taught to believe, fails in reality, and starts to reject it.

Well written article, BTW.

Bump for later.
POLITICAL CORRECTNESS
A doctrine fostered by a delusional, illogical liberal minority,
and rabidly promoted by an unscrupulous mainstream media,
which holds forth the proposition that it is entirely possible
to pick up a turd by the clean end.
By spreading this definition around, perhaps we can employ one of the more effective methods of deflating and defeating the fools who practice and promote it: RIDICULE.
Unless stopped and soon PC will DESTROY Western Civilization — if it hasnt already.
Read this, then read about the 45 communist goals listed in “The Naked Communist”; it all comes together.
It is said that Satan’s greatest deception is convincing us that he doesn’t exist; communism’s greatest deception is similar.
Bttt
Indeed it is leftist brainwashing. The architects and disciples of today’s leftist failures needs to be pointed out over and over again. I usually start with the trillions in debt, the bankrupting of our future, in order to keep their dream of big government utopia alive today.

And to add to that, I say “ Hail to the Redskins” and screw the PC would-be tyrants. PC ain't a joke. It is a deadly threat.
Anyway, I have seven of my songs I've done "videos" for...they're all on the 10 Pound Test You Tube channel. I've tried shopping my songs with various bands (not Skynyrd yet...that's a good idea), but haven't gotten anywhere yet. Still trying, though...never give up!
