Was kidding...when I was about 10-12 years old I was always working on snowmobiles etc, I really did not know what I was doing, but somehow used to keep 1 going.

Old farmer neighbour used to rib me , he would say the same thing every day, check to see if the pin has fallen out of the johnston bar

To this day I never knew what it was, I guess it was part of a train as you say.

Two definitions for Johnson Bar.

A Johnson bar is a hand lever with several distinct positions and a positive latch to hold the lever in the selected position.

And the second which is the one I referred to which allows one man to slowly move a loaded freight car by prying the Johnson bar between the rail & the wheel, causing the car to move just a bit. Keep repeating the operation and you can move a railcar, shunting it around the yard without an engine.
