Electricity is like Kryptonite to me but even having intentionally avoided working with it as much as possible, even I learned the hows through osmosis of those around me.
Remember the pic of the kid with the fork and the light socket? I was never the same after that. (and watching an an MSD digital 6 send pretty blue waves across my chest didn’t help later in life either) ;)
But yea, that stuff is basic. To us. But many of the new wave is just clueless. They cant go to Home Depot and buy the right parts that go to wire the fan much less work the tools much less run the wires behind a wall and across the ceiling much less make the right connections. They don’t know ANY of these things, all of which one would use to survive.
Be careful Jane, if you see the replies from Male Freepers, I don’t think they are interested in exchanging information ROFL
This is both reassuring and intimidating. :)
I’ve always been a bit intrigued by ham radio, and I do think I will start to look for the basic equipment and get some learning in.
I used to date a guy who’s dad was a big ham guy, it was fascinating to hang around when he talking. Very many years ago.
I wonder if he wants to sell his equipment.
Thank you.
Because we of the Brotherhood of Steel have a somewhat different view...

LMAO.
“Next, Id like to get a HAM.”
Better get some chess and beer to go with that. You can chow down on a ham sammie, wash it down with a brewski while you blab away on your CB. ;^}
If one cannot have Lydia to carry ones burdens, then T50 power armor and a plasma rifle with an accelerator is a serviceable substitute.
And a pony. I miss my pony.
You can almost double that!
I would be OK alone if I have to survive, but most of the skills you listed this time are beyond me. Changing tires and using the jack are OK but I have just called the AAA for years now. Jumper cables and battery charger makes the need to call for help very small.
I have led a very easy life but chose to camp and backpack and am comfortable outdoors. Gardening and canning were just fun things to do.
Girl Scout training and First Aid certification came naturally. (Adirondacks 4th and 8th lake, I seem to remember) I went backpacking 4th of July, after daughter #2 was born on Memorial day weekend. Easy trip and she, and her gear, was my only load, but great fun and did not hurt either of us...1962!
See, I said almost double that age!
The Baofeng’s are pretty good radios. I have one as a back up, won’t worry if I drop it into the bay. The antennas are a weak link and some are faulty. However, you can get good aftermarket antennas or even connect it to an outside antenna or (for your car) a mobile mag mount antenna.
That is a frequently asked question that I addressed in 2011 here at Freerepublic.com
Here’s some of the text and the link:
“The project was not- conceived under the assumption that it would become ILLEGAL- for Americans to communicate with one another. I think if they/he shut down the Internet it would be something of a CHARADE. In this situation, the pretense for example might be that there was a cyber-terror incident in which the cyber-terrorists supposedly did something that warranted an Internet shut down in order to investigate or they shut it down in order to protect the infrastructure or to ostensibly protect us...
There would still have to be some internal resistance just as we have now from Congress and our state governments who are suing the feds. So were probably looking at underhanded attempts using the FCC and other bureaucracies, even czars - to violate the constitution and our rights all while still somewhat constrained by congress (one would hope).
In this case The Saboteur and his accomplices in the Senate would have to stay within the confines of their pretense emergency. So the agenda would be to stifle most of the communication under those pretenses. I dont see them coming out and making a LAW- specifically elucidating their leftist agenda of disabling the freedom of Americans like us to gather and protest in the manner we gathered after the last meltdown.
By staying within the confines of their charade and successfully shutting down communications via Internet and phone availability WITHOUT further legislation, the left could conceivably prevent- another organic uprising the type of which led to the tea parties around the nation almost over-night. Even with all of the existing tea parties and other groups, we are so inter-dependent on e-mail, message boards like here at FR and phones (most of which are cellular) even with these groups having been formed, take away that communicative ability and we are all isolated within the chaos and have no idea when to meet, where to meet, what to bring how to help etc.
I dont see them getting the ability to ban CB usage as there is no valid pretense to justify it. So I dont think it is going to be a situation where we have to speak in code and break any valid laws. I cant speak for all states but I believe my state government of Florida will fight valiantly before that happens; but they wouldnt have nearly as much ability to overcome an Internet and cell network shutdown as we are inter connected with other states etc.
I dont see unmitigated tyranny perhaps until the Chi-coms and the Arabs sack us. That being the case, it is good to have a plan for EVERY scenario. The aforementioned is where codes would DEFINITELY come in handy, in which case we wouldnt be violating any US laws because Trojan Horse Hussein would have succeeded in his obvious long term plan for this country and there would no longer be a US Constitution or US government.”

So basically, I don’t see them getting state cooperation to “jam” the signals in all of these areas around the country. In some of your Blue states, God only knows. That’s why I also rec getting OUT of blue states and move to SC, FL, AL, TX... with good state government.
Good grief, I put an apostrophe in Baofengs. I must have been tired.

Same as before, head out to the golf course.
I just passed 57 years in the hobby and think Amateur Radio is as great today as it was when I was first licensed in 1957.
