Sylvan Lake is a nice quiet middle class town near the more wealthy areas of Oakland County, but it borders the battle zone called Pontiac. The stretch of Telegraph Road she was walking on was just outside Pontiac city limits.

If I’m not mistaken, Pontiac doesn’t even have a police department any more. It’s not unusual to run into vagrants and hoodlums in and near Pontiac.

Pontiac ditched some 500 city employees including most police. Police went to the county who cover Pontiac now. Other city services were privatized.

Having stayed there for some years, I can attest to the accuracy of your statement. It’s one of those places that make you or break you.

Do you think Sylvan Lake would be a safe place to relocate then? How sad that Pontiac has become so awful. What about Pontiac Lake? I grew up waterskiing there as a child.

Your assessment of that part of Sylvan Lake is bang on the money. My sister and her boyfriend lived there before relocating to Royal Oak—they are without a doubt the two trashiest people I know personally. Actually her boyfriend very recently relocated from Royal Oak to Jackson Pen, where he’ll be a guest of the state for 19 months to four years. Lovely couple.
