A very good novel was written about the reality of life in NFL by a former Cowboy's wide receiver named Peter Gent. The book was called North Dallas Forty, and although it described an NFL in the late 1960’s and early 70’s - and thus before the megamoney that's part of the game today - the reality of drug abuse to counter the effects of crippling injuries was present on every page. Thus, this pretense that this is some new problem is an utter and outright lie.

And I say this as a fan of the NFL.

Heck, Bobby Layne used to gulp a few shots at halftime.

I don’t know if the original article was making this out to be new problem thus, it can’t be lie.

I don’t know if anybody is really saying it’s a new problem. The new aspect is former players who got those various shots to hide symptoms so they could get back on the field are now suing.
