In the End Neither Michelle O nor Batik Could Save the Ladies Home Journal

Can you believe it? Another venerable American institution is about to go the way of the buggy whip. No, not the Bill of Rights – not yet anyway. It’s the the Ladies Home Journal, which is folding after a 131 year run.

There is no way you can blame Lady M for the demise: she did the best she could, gracing its cover 3 times in just 5 years.

And in issues that included such cutting edge features as “cleavage etiquette” -

“Anti-aging for ‘real’ women” -

lhjLHJ recommends Photoshop as the most cost effective method

And “the real secret to long-term weight loss” -

Again, LHJ recommends Photoshop – the results are not permanent butt then, they are immediate:

Meanwhile, BO is still in the Far East, addressing critical foreign relations issues such as cigarette sales and the missing airliner.

He also showed off some Bahasa Malaysia he picked up while living with Mom in Indonesia. Which gave him a chance to honor Stanley Ann’s legacy as well:

"For my mother, batik wasn't about fashion. ... It was a window into the lives of others — their cultures, lives and tradition," the president said.

Barack-Obama-and-his-mother-Ann-DunhamBO and Mom both in native batik, (ditto the bed). Oddly, their hair seems to be leaning left.

“My mother believed and I believe that whether we come from a remote village or a big city, whether we live in the U.S. or Malaysia, we all share basic human aspirations: to live in dignity and in peace, to shape our own destiny, to be able to make a living and work hard and support a family,” he said.

Oddly enough, it would seem that Big Guy does not share Mom’s appreciation for the Indonesian fabric:

bo batikBO, working hard (in batik) to make a living.

Royal-Castle-Child-Development-CenteMO, working hard (in batik) to make a living.

So, Bo’s heading home soon, and since Lady M didn’t get to accompany him he has to bring her a really special present. He didn’t think that another batik sundress for our annual 4th of July celebration would cut it, as Lady M made it clear that Stanley Ann was correct: batik isn’t about fashion.

So he got her something really special: oriental batik eyelashes. I think she’ll love them.

Print magazines are dead.

(With the exception of Catholic Answers magazine, which is growing 8-)

There isn’t a single women’s or men’s magazine at the general news stands that is worth purchasing. In fact, even if they gave them away gratis (which a lot of the magazines wind up doing through airline and other loyalty points programs), they aren’t worth taking. They are beyond fluff to the downright inane. Again and again with the same diet and cloths and sex advice sprinkled among ads. If the editorial staff would have done focus groups, they’d have learned that American women don’t look up to Michelle Obama. Just the opposite. Her photo on the cover is a detriment. Featuring Lassie on the cover would have sold more.

Oh, they’re Tom Harkin left-wing Democrats. Don’t kid yourself.

I remember quite well how Meredith was the holy grail for people who were at the point where they had gotten a little real-world experience and wanted to become art directors or editors in order to escape 8 hours of board work or copy writing for some middling manufactory in one of the minor burgs. More often than not, they got another form of drudgery- albeit with a "hip" address, Des Moines' pretensions to culture and an all-pervasive, elitist corporate culture.

One part of the latter was an attitude akin to the apocryphal Pauline Kael comment about not knowing anyone who ever voted Republican, the difference being that they DID know people who voted Republican, but they'd learned to keep their mouths shut about it.

Whenever some Urbandale, Clive, West Des Moines or Johnston snob would start making pretentious noises, I’d remind them of how recently their subdivision was a cornfield.

No women’s magazine has been purchased in this house since the Bent One and his wife attempted to make the general public swallow all the slop the two attempted to feed us during his most embarrassing episode....or her most embarrassing, as the case may be. Even Southern Living is no longer purchased....what a wonderful magazine can be when turned into a rag. Would not use it to potty train my dog. Family Circle, Woman’s Day, all purchased each new edition. Firstly, for the recipes and tips.....then as each pivoted more and more attempting to become full page liberals, refused to spend one thin dime on obtaining a

copy. A lonely voice of stand by principals, but just could not bring myself to give the dregs the time of day. Everything they touch turns to garbage. Does it ever change? Not as yet!!

Some authors are just as bad. I hate it when I’m happily reading a mystery, and here comes some environmental garbage or a sly slam against Reagan.
