A navy helicopter was photographed there - a Seahawk. And Puentes in his narrative description said that there were 2 helicopters hovering overhead; another one came after Lang. I just saw that as I was reading through the accounts again. I forgot to copy the link when I saved that report so I don’t have that. Sorry about that.
OK, so it’s obvious I better quit, the authorities apparently don’t think they owe the public a full report, the articles in print contain contradictions, the talking heads on TV are only in it for the sensationalism, the eye-witness reports are sketchy because of their limited range of view, and we are trying to construct a scenario out of all that, plus a series of photographs that are mostly captures from an edited video.
I think I’ve taken up enough space here.
US NAVY SEAHAWK HELICOPTER PERFORMS TOUCH AND GO EXCERCISE.
See what I mean? Maybe Miller mispoke when he said AIRCRAFT. Maybe what he saw were Seahawk Helicopters.
We could go on forever and all we might achieve is to correct every mistatement recorded throughout the telling of the event by the numerous individuals involved.

Miller called it fortunate that a military aircraft was doing touch and goes at the Kalaupapa airport around the time of the crash and reported the accident. Coast Guard and Maui County Fire Rescue personnel arrived in about 20 minutes and started the rescue operation, said Miller.
