Polar vortex is not a new name to meteorologists...only to some in the public. It's the polar vortex moving southward that brings the polar express but not necessarily any old cold front. What the polar vortex moving southward does is allows for a colder " source region" to be tapped. A cold front may have pacific air or Canadian air. When the polar vortex moves south, it allows the Alaskan, polar or Siberian air to be tapped and drawn southward.
Every time you have ever heard the word "arctic front," know the polar vortex was involved. 1977, 1983,1985,1989 and others...including now.
But the deal now is that they are all using *polar vortex* as the new *beat the drum* buzz word du jour.
I just find that kind of humorous.
