Dispelling Myths: The Case for Immigration Reform [Enjoy your made-in-America ZOT, troll]
Red Dirt Report ^ | 12/27/2013 | Brian Woodward

Posted on 12/27/2013 11:24:17 AM PST by honestabe010

In his press conference on December 20th, President Obama urged the House of Representatives to support the Senate’s immigration bill, which passed 68-32 in late June. Among the concerns cited by Americans who oppose reform are that immigrants will take their jobs, drive down wages, increase criminal activity, burden the welfare system, and reshape the cultural dynamic of the country. These concerns are mostly ill-founded. The legitimate concerns have real solutions, and a more open immigration policy will be a net benefit for all Americans...

Highlights from Article:

- A 2013 study by the American Action Forum states that "immigration reform can raise population growth, labor force growth, and thus growth in Gross Domestic Product (GDP).”

- In 2013 the Bipartisan Policy Center came to similar conclusions. It makes the prediction that current provisions, as included in the Senate Bill, would raise GDP 4.8 percent over twenty years.

- According to the Immigration Policy Center, immigrant males between the ages of 18 and 39 (which constitute the greatest portion of the prison population) are five times less likely to be incarcerated than are natives.

- A 2011 survey by the Pew Research Center revealed that 92 percent of second generation and 96 percent of third generation Hispanics speak English proficiently.

- A 2010 Gallup poll revealed that Hispanics attend church services more often than non-Hispanic whites.

- Since an influx of immigrants means an expansion of the labor supply, many assert that the result will be less jobs and lower wages. However, as asserted by Jason Riley, a member of the Wall Street Journal editorial board, “The number of jobs in the United States is not static. It’s fluid, which is how we want it to be.”

I was born in Reno, spent the first five years of my life in Alaska, then the next 12 in the heart of the Rockies. After that, I’ve been “all over” and experienced more winter than I ever thought I wanted to.

With my age and the arthritis, I’m happiest with dry heat. (Too much participation in sports, I think: softball, basketball, volleyball, swimming, hiking, horseback riding...WALKING!)

That seemed like somewhat of a Spartan comment.

One prepares for a proper retirement by doing much less of all that.

Perhaps, but at least I have something to retire FROM, which a lot of couch potatoes don’t have. I mean, how can you retire from being lazy?

Oh. My bad. The Late Igor. When he “retired” he said he had all day to do nothing and when he got tired of doing nothing, he could lie down and take a nap. His retirement was nearly the death of me! LOL!

That's me, Bob. I am so ready for retirement, I just need a bit more scratch in the bank....

I changed careers instead. I like to think I’m a writer, but there’s no retirement from that.

You’ll know I’ve retired from writing when all the letters start being the same.

You mean, like the chain letters I get so often? If I paid attention to them, I would be homeless, deaf, blind, with kidney failure, and cancer of the entire organ system.

So yah, Bob...I’ll wait... *bwahahahahaha*

I don’t have enough scratch for changing careers yet. I was thinking I’d like to be a greeter at Wal-Mart. I have a friend at work who took a part-time job as a cocktail waitress just for the hoot of it. She didn’t need the money, it was just a fun way to meet people. The isolation of the lab was a little too much, I guess.

I thought she was insane. Nutty as a mad hatter.

And it’s -17F!

Anyone else feeling like a crazed popsicle?

The only crazed popsicle is your dog’s offending appendage...

I am off to have a discussion about life and the pursuit of solidified glowbull warmthing with my olde Deere..

By the time I got out there today the wind had rearranged some of the solidified glowbull warmthing so that some places had only a 2" covering and other spots were drifted to over a foot.

When the ancient Deere is running properly it still takes two and a half hours to relocate all the glowbull warmthing that coats the drive at 26" at-a-time bites. And it was 7° out there...

If you have the dough, I highly recommend an awd ATV with a plow. Much faster and then you can tow the grandkids in a sled.

I wondered about that yesterday morning. It was -20F. I was worried it would break off.

Project for summer when there is less demand for plowthings... Ofcourse, the atv part might never be 'on sale'..

I picked up the ancient Deere on ebay maybe seven years ago. Wonder what the odds are that I could find the atv/plow combo.. (within retrieval distance of course.. ;-)

"I don’t have enough scratch for changing careers yet."

Some of us discover our career changes arriving when our employers determine that our obsolete job skills don't warrant their continued support.
