No. Pleading guilty, or paying her some kind of settlement would be giving in to them. Re-read what I suggested he should have said. Stand by his innocence, but recognize that the accusations, the controversy and the publicity were not good for the award. Come back and play for it next year. That would have enhanced both the prestige of the award, and his own personal dignity.

You are right….that would have been seen as an admission of guilt by almost everybody. It’s funny how many Freepers are willing to give away someone else’s award….almost like liberals willing to give away someone else’s money!!
Nobody would have believed his innocence had he done that……get real. And it might have even compromised his position in a potential civil suit….maybe even a potential criminal trial had it come to that. You know the prosecution would pounce on that.

They were relentless in his promotion but never held the cards.

I do: Florida "justice" is all about politics and money. There is WAYYYY too much money wrapped up in Winston and FSU's success, and Bowden and FSU have HUGE influence politically. On the other hand, George Zimmerman was an embarrassment for the powers-that-be and had to be taken down.
Well dude, there is a lot of evidence working against your expert analysis. FTR, I think he's a bit over rated, and I think he's helped tremendously by the best group of receivers I've seen any team have in a long time. I also think Mariota of Oregon is awesome.
But your pro analogy is weak, given that the former FSU QB, who could not do what Winston did in college, is doing pretty well as a rookie.

Ironic those 12% that left Winston off had Manziel and McCarron on their ballot.
Manziel sold his autographs and joked about getting away with it because since he was paid in cash, there was no paper trail.
As for McCarron, he apparentally cheated on Katherine Webb with another model. And if you find the photos taken with his mom, well then....
So if you’re going to hold Winston to a moral standard, these 2 should be as well.
I don’t assume he is guilty of anything beyond bad judgment and weak morals. I am a sinner too and don’t expect every jock to be a saint. However, my 10 year old nephew has a poster of Winston on his wall along with other great athletes and I know what kind of message this sends him.
I thought his play deserved the award, but I was a bit surprised he won it for that reason and it is obvious some of the voters agreed.
I am a parent and it seems overwhelming when I consider the messages my children get via the media and culture. It is unfortunate all this dirt came out due to what appears to be a very questionable accusation, but the interview reports made it clear this was a regular happening in the house. The Heisman award makes it clear to impressionable minds that the only thing that matters is the play on the field and the same kind of promiscuous behavior many criticize in the homosexual community is okay for heterosexuals.
It will unfortunately get even more publicity as the civil suit happens now that some attorney sees dollar signs.

You sir have presented a false choice….and again, an irrelevancy. The DA has one job, to prosecute cases he can win. Period. Yep, that’s his ONLY job. He said it time and time again during this affair…..prosecute only cases he can win. That may mean innocence, or it may mean a lack of evidence, or it may mean a weak witness.
Thus, the DA’s word would NOT have necessarily covered Winston had he done what you said, and stepped aside. Not at all.
Well I wrestle with what you do vis a vis a son. My son is for some reason a big NBA fan. I can’t stand that league or it’s players for the most part.
There are NBA players I wish my son did not idolize…..however…..my standards for my son and the standards for the typical NBA awards have nothing to do with each other. There’s a lot of players I would not want on my son’s wall….that I would be perfectly accepting as award winners. Two different things.
And besides, Winston is not yet 20. He may make your son proud by the time he’s 25 or 30. Who knows. Or maybe he will crash and burn and your son will learn from it.
Cut me some slack here... I am just a parent that feels overwhelmed with trying to raise good kids in a world that seems to send the opposite message.
He is a great QB and trust me - I know what goes on with college athletes, but he got busted and it’s out there for the whole world to read about now. Regular occurrence and a roommate who not only felt it was okay to film it, but asked for the second turn is not something that should be explained to my 10 year old nephew that has a poster of him in his room.
It’s just frustrating and I am sorry all of this happened. I would have been perfectly happy to live in ignorance and celebrate his athletic ability with everyone else.
This crap happened in Norman Rockwell’s America too, but people would have been ashamed to admit it. Perhaps I am not cut out for the world because I am still offended that every other commercial on television deals with erectile dysfunction!
Which merely reinforces my original post on this thread stating that Winston is a worthy heir to the legacy of OJ Simpson. The system in both cases exonerated both men of the accusations brought against them (albeit at different stages of the legal process). In one case the DA stated he didn't have adequate evidence to bring a prosecution and in the other, the jury opined that the evidence was insufficient to convict. Since both walked free, they are equal in the eyes of the law...just like the rest of us who aren't serving time or pending any charges, with the exception that they both have Heisman trophies, awarded at least in part, for their "integrity."
Ugh.... the NBA? Good luck with that one! If you can keep your son from getting a tattoo you will have accomplished a major feat.
It’s hard to be a parent and it’s harder to be a kid because the world throws so much on them and they lack perspective to realize consequences.
The OJ Simpson analogy is a very poor one….given that there was indeed a winnable case there that was blown by an ignorant jury. No such situation is even close here….and oh by the way….NO ONE DIED HERE. LET ME REPEAT. NO ONE DIED HERE.
ONCE AGAIN, NO ONE DIED HERE. The OJ analogy is just absurd frankly. And no, they aren’t even totally equal in the eyes of the law either. And one thing that you still cannot figure out a way to contemplate is the fact that Winston may only be guilty of being picked up by a girl.
Is this really the second coming of OJ? Really? Preposterous.
