Nothing compared to California. The ones who come to Texas, as opposed to just passing through to more liberal states, came to WORK, and they do. Welfare in Texas Bites, as it should. Of course Texas is the shortest route from most of Mexico to anywhere else, save the west coast and some inter-mountain states.And of course other border states. But Texas has a much longer border with Mexico than any other state, so more cross here. Plus the climate isn't exactly conducive to long walks in the Sun in most places along the border.
Don’t forget Lone Star Steel as well as Brookshire Grocery (canning and production facility) are in East Texas. More essential industries that we have.
The best medical centers in the country are in Dallas and Houston, computer manufacturing and development in Austin and Dallas, Dallas is a financial center, Fort Worth is outstanding in the arts, we have exceptional higher education (UT System, A&M, Tech, SMU, TCU - hey we could bring back the Southwest Conference and have a full season just by adding North Texas and a few other schools into the mix).
We have it all and we really need to do something about it now.

Vermont, Texas and Hawaii were all independent countries before becoming states.
A big yep to everything you said. If there’s any state that has the necessary infrastructure to survive on its own, it’s Texas.
That must bother the Commies like nobody’s business.
