Montreal student detained in Philippines

A 24-year-old Montreal student is being detained in the Philippines after taking part in an anti-government protest in July.

Kim Chatillon-Meunier was about to leave the South Asian country Friday when officers from the Bureau of Immigration arrested her at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport in Manila. The Université de Montréal student was in the Philippines working with women in a Manila slum on an internship funded by Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development Canada. During the internship, she also joined several humanitarian and political groups.

Chatillon-Meunier acted as a delegate to the International Conference on Human Rights, which culminated in a protest against the alleged human rights abuses of Filipino president Benigno Aquino’s administration. The July rally saw hundreds of riot police clash with protesters in the streets of Manila.

“This is blatant harassment and a violation of Kim Chatillon-Meunier’s fundamental rights, including the right to free expression,” says Malcolm Guy of the Centre for Philippine Concerns, a Montreal-based activist group. “It is also a clear violation of Kim’s right to study and support human-rights issues in the Philippines.”

I now live in the Philippines. I came here because I can live cheaply on my retirement income and contribute to furthering God's plan of salvation. I didn't run away from America, but I did note that the America I once loved is not the one we see now. I see the people here as contented and happy. I go into the stores and the clerks are all singing with the music. Not just a few of them, but in every place I go. It is a great place to live, and the people are good to be around.

Yesterday, I went for a haircut (50 pesos, or about $1.25), and while there I got to talking with a stranger. He invited me to come to his house about 30 Km south of my city, and I took him at his offer. I went there about 3pm and his wife barbecued some chicken and made some things to go along for us to eat. We sat around and talked about life and he took me to his beach. He owns five fishing boats and is a millionaire. He owns acres and acres of rice fields, a big coconut farm, two piggeries, and yet, lives a simple life among his employees, who he teats as friends. The sea has been too rough for fishing this week, but he invited me to come along next week when they go back out.

I will be there and be happy to work alongside him and his crew. I won't accept money, but I found a new friend. He even gave me a key to his two room beach house made from bamboo. It has a toilet and bed, and I can use it as my own, he tells me. How many strangers in America would even think to such a thing. Yet, it is not uncommon here.
