Michael Steele on Wednesday said Liz Cheneys decision to challenge fellow Republican Sen. Mike Enzi for his Wyoming Senate seat will be disastrous and split the party.
The former Republican National Committee chairman told MSNBCs Alex Wagner that he thinks former Sen. Alan Simpson was right to call the situation a disaster.
I think hes right, I think its going to open a lot of fissures in the party. I think this is an insurgent move by Cheney, Steele said Wednesday on Now with Alex Wagner.
Steele criticized Cheneys comments that Enzi has compromised too much and gone along to get along.
When have people gone along to get along in Washington in the last four or five years? Steele said. This is clearly more of a personal opportunity to, thinking theres an opening here, and, you know, its going to be tough.
Agreeing with fellow panelist E.J. Dionne, Steele said he hopes race is a chance for rank and file Republicans to fight back against a Washington tea party.
I hope they do. I hope the Enzi team really come prepared with a strong A game, because this could be a seminal moment for a longer conversation, Steele said.
Guess we know whose side the (horrible)former RNC chairman is on: EJ Dionne's!! What more do we need to know. Alan Simpson, Michael Steeele and EJ Dionne, think Enzi should be reelected. Gee, I don't need to know much more, do I?
God forbid an incumbent senator get challenged and be forced to justify his votes! Specter didn't like it and changed parties. Olympia Snowe didn't like and and retired. Richard Luger didn't like it and his arrogant ass lost big. The same with Bob Bennett.
And obviously Michael Steeel doesn't like the Tea Party. Oh, no. Can't have that. "why I completely agree with you Alan and EJ!"
Three terms is enough! Time for Enzi to go!
Liz Cheney’s run isn’t going to cripple the Republican party in Wyoming. Whoever wins the nomination will win in the general election. What it will do is tell every sitting senator that no matter how conservative you are there will always be someone willing to be a carpetbagger and run against you with buckets of outside money.
Is this the “loser” Michael Steele who couldn’t win in MD and then was a complete loser as head of the RNC? Is that enough losing or what? Why doesn’t this loser get lost?
Michael Steele has crap for brains
The GOPe would be wise just to let them.
We’re already a divided country so what’s one more partisan? FUBO Cheney is my hero.
What I see in Liz Cheney is the same “moderate” old crap.
And this is why he is the EX-RNC.
No, Simpson was the disaster. He was elected to represent one of the most conservative states in America, then threw social conservatives under the bus. That's why he is a former senator.
The nicest thing you can say about him is that he didn't quite stoop to the level of Chuck Hagel.
The disaster moniker is hyperbolic in a Cheney vs. Enzi contest. It should be reserved for people like McCain, Graham, Hagle or Simpson who throw their base under the bus in return for meaningless accolades from the left.
Enzi could have been Ted Cruz’s role model. Cheney may be way less stellar than Cruz too.
I was through with Steele when he cozied up to the race hustler Sharpton and spoke at his NAN convention.
Maybe. But I trust the voters in Wyoming to sort it out. They’ve sent far better U.S. Senators to DC than voters in either of our states.
I know squat about Mike Enzi.
I know Cheney and thought she should be running on the presidential ticket. Senate is a no brainer.
If it does, Michael, they are fissures that need to be opened up.
Sorry, but if Sen. Enzi had done a great job, nobody would be looking to run against him.
The last thing the Founding Fathers intended when they created the Senate was for it to become an American version of the British House of Lords, where the members served for life.
Thanks to Liz Cheney, at least the voters of Wyoming will have a chance to decide whether they want the Senate to continue to exist as a bunch of elderly people sitting around drooling while the country deteriorates or if they want it to become an effective legislative body made up of under-retirement-age members interested in solving America’s problems.
Cheney was my hero, as well, until he started with the pro-homo stuff. Yuck!
