Well, the cable news networks are non stop with their coverage of the air crash in San Francisco. Looking at the pictures, it seems a miracle that the number of fatalities is so low. If there is one unintended consequence of this crash..at least we will be spared talk about Trayvon Martin and George Zimmerman for the next few days. As the networks are talking aviation and nothing but, I thought it would be a slight diversion to discuss our favorite aviation themed movies.
One of my favorite movies, too. I like the one where the kid says ‘Cadillac of the skies’ ... can’t remember the movie name but it wasn’t an aviation movie either. Real emotions jerker, up there with ‘A Town Called Alice’ and ‘Dragonfly’.
Giving away our ages aren't we?
A Guy Named Joe (with Spencer Tracy, Irene Dunne, and Van Johnson), later remade as Always with Richard Dreyfus, Holly Hunter, and John Goodman.
Spencer Tracy comes back to earth after he dies in a plane crash. There’s a wonderful scene where he talks with his love (who has since fallen in love with another man) while she is flying a plane.

And of course, as much as we hate Tom Cruise, and as corny as the movie is, you have to love “Top Gun”. It is like a parody of an aviation movie...:)
I just bought the 3-D version.
Airplane , Secondhand Lions and of course The Great Santini
Since war movies have been introduced, I’ll add mine - Top Gun.
I can’t remember the title but Jimmy Stewart was the pilot. The plane crashed in the desert and they made a working plane from the parts and flew out.
Limiting it to civilian aviation... I thought Always had some really good aviation scenes.

Strategic Air Command
Corny, but I love all of the old SAC scenes.
Yes, a great movie. Good cast, too.
That movie showed the Soviets we could kick their butts. They took notice.
"Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo"!!!!!
I saw the movie for the first time a few months ago and really enjoyed it. I then went and read the Wikipedia page. It's interesting how much darker the book was than the movie. The main character was about 20 years younger than George Peppard and ended up being blackmailed by the Countess into marriage.
Memphis Belle.
Fear of Flying
(sorry....WWII...but saw the other "Twelve O'clock High" nominations...so....)
Flight of the phoenix. Love that one!
Yes! That was it. Great serial.
Also one with Gene Autry about alien invaders. I think they were called “thunder riders”. It was way ahead of it’s time.
I know people hate DiCaprio, and I know he is a libtard, but...man. I thought he did a great job in “The Aviator”.
Midway, the airport scene in Bullitt...just to add a couple more.
“Twelve O’Clock High” is one of the finest films ever made..War, avaition, and the psychological study of men under great stress. I was tryign to lmit the thread to non-military films.. As great as the film is, the book is also a superb read. I have a copy..Long out of print..they show up on Amazon from $50 - $500. Why they don’t make it available for an e-reader I don’t understand.
I think Steve Hinton was flying it and he pranged it for that movie and got pretty banged up.
So many good one mentioned in this thread though, kudo's to all...
The Sea-Bee scenes ( with "Tatoo" on the beach ) in Gold-Finger are amazing, dang shame they blew that bird up, it has some interesting modifications.
Then again, that pilot Corky who's last name I can't pronouce or type, flying the BD-5 in the later James Bond movie was way cool..
