What is your favorite aviation movie?
one man's opinion...

Posted on 07/06/2013 4:42:52 PM PDT by ken5050

Well, the cable news networks are non stop with their coverage of the air crash in San Francisco. Looking at the pictures, it seems a miracle that the number of fatalities is so low. If there is one unintended consequence of this crash..at least we will be spared talk about Trayvon Martin and George Zimmerman for the next few days. As the networks are talking aviation and nothing but, I thought it would be a slight diversion to discuss our favorite aviation themed movies.

Nah, that was a little too much for me. Con Air is bad, don’t get me wrong. I wince at so much in that movie, but then there are parts that are just plain fun. Nic Cage’s ridiculous hair, Dave Chappelle’s character’s antics, and Steve Buscemi and John Malkovich doing their best to seriously act given the ridiculous script are all somehow enjoyable to me.

But, full disclosure, I usually find some charm in even the absolute worst Nic Cage movies. He is just full tilt, non-stop crazy, and I find that kind of mesmerizing, even if he has the depth and range of a puddle.

I didn’t think the remake was that bad, but I saw the remake before the original, so it might have colored my judgement.

Yeah, that was a funny scene. I just liked it mainly for the fact that it focused on something that other movies haven’t. So much is recycled nowadays, an original premise gets some points from me right off the bat.

Yeah. For someone who has no idea how that works, the whole thing with the rectangles of wood, stacked and handed from person to person...it was interesting.

When you think of the thousands of lives a stack of those things represents, it is a little sobering.

I’d like to see an alternate ending where the carrier participates WWII.

My best guess is that the war would have been shorter...a LOT shorter.

I still think Tora, Tora, Tora is still the best movie made about Pearl Harbor.

I stand with you on that. That crap they came up with here recently was the biggest joke to come out of weirdsville in a long time.

Haven't seen the other postings. One of my neighbors, Will Lehner, was at Pearl aboard the USS Ward, under the command of LCDR William W. Outerbridge, right before the attack.

He always felt Tora, Tora, Tora was pretty accurate in many areas of the attack on Pearl. I'll stand with him.

Cheers!

Tora, Tora, Tora! was a great movie.

I also loved Airport, with Dean Martin, Jacqueline Bisset, and a star-studded cast.

Loved Airport as well.

Wasn't George Kennedy in that one? I always loved seeing Jaqueline Bisset. Great dame!

Another interesting tidbit about my neighbor, Will. He had seen the gun hit the conning tower of the Jap sub as it was trying to sneak into Pearl while aboard the USS Ward. A few years ago Henry Ballard invited Will to go with him on an expedition to find the sunken Jap sub. Will went, but Ballard would not listen to where Will knew the sub to be. Needless to say they never found it. A few months later some Japanese students at the University of Hawaii asked Will if he knew where the sub was. He gave them coordinates of where he knew the sub to be. The students found it.

I lost much respect to Ballard's arrogance. Will shall always be my hero, neighbor and friend!

Please leave all the pics off your pings. They take up way too much bandwidth and data usage on my phone and tablet. We all kmow from your heading that it’s an aviation ping. The pics all the time are totally unnecessary.

Thanks in advance!!!
