Well, the cable news networks are non stop with their coverage of the air crash in San Francisco. Looking at the pictures, it seems a miracle that the number of fatalities is so low. If there is one unintended consequence of this crash..at least we will be spared talk about Trayvon Martin and George Zimmerman for the next few days. As the networks are talking aviation and nothing but, I thought it would be a slight diversion to discuss our favorite aviation themed movies.

I guess for me the question is what movies did you really enjoy where aviation played a big part.
I have NOT seen many of the older flicks many of you mentioned so not able to comment.
Ones I liked that I have seen:
The Aviator
Pearl Harbor
United 93
Air Force One
Flight
Amelia
Goldfinger.. the music with the spraying of Fort Knox? wow
and of course the hoots in Airplane flicks

Yep, “King of the Rocket Men” (1949), undoubtedly.
Lots of aviation-themed serials... comic-strip ones like “Tailspin Tommy” (1934) and “Hop Harrigan” (1947). And “Captain Midnight” (1942) and “Blackhawk” (1952). John Wayne was in one called “Shadow of the Eagle” (1932). There was “Flying G-Men” (1939). A nifty one with Bob Steele called “Mystery Squadron” (1933). A few others, I’m sure.
I am not a fan of Jennifer Connelly but I am a fan of parts of her.
Flight of the phoenix. Paul Mantz died in the filming of that movie and was one of the greats in aviation film making from back in the day. Great movie to boot.
I’m with you- The Right Stuff. It had its corny moments, but ALL of the stuff about Chuck Yeager was great! Best pilot of them all- and he didn’t qualify!
This isn’t a movie per se, it’s a great period piece, a promo for the Lockheed Super Constellation, that likely would have preceded many cinema showings of classic aviation movies of a certain era, 1951 - 1958.
Looks like this promo might’ve inspired the writers of Star Trek, too, first airing over a decade later. Watch for it in the intro:

Since there are so many aviation and aviation movie buffs gathered on this thread, I thought the related diversion would be appreciated.

Ha! I just posted that clip a few weeks ago to a couple of my old SAC buddies.
The serials were the best of the show. My favorite was definitely the rocket man. There was one in which the cavalry was chasing what I guess was outlaws. That was my least favorite one.
Gene Autry and the Thunder Riders, ie: “aliens from outer space” was also a favorite. This was at the Bay Theatre on every saturday. They would often have the front of the thratre decorated in the theme of the main movie. I was only about four when we started watching them and I think my admission was only 5 cents. My older Brothers had to pay a dime. Of course I had to go with them.

I have to say 12 O’clock high.Just an all around great movie.We actually bought the b-17 fuselage that was used to film the up close scenes of Peck as General Savage.The really did run an 1820 engine on the sound stage to make it more realistic.The fuselage hung in a bar in greely Colorado for over 30 years and we’re really lucky to get our hands on it.The plane is under rebuild to fly and we will a lot longer in the tooth when it flys again.It was also used in the War Lover(my second favorite movie) and also Tora Tora Tora my third favorite movie,See a pattern here?????
“The High and the Mighty”, though dated, is hard to beat. The movie pretty much sums up life in the front end.
The clip of John Wayne bitch slapping Robert Stack is used in some training classes as an example of old school CRM.

Yup! I love the scene at the end when he ejects from the 104 and he’s walking away from the wreckage. Nearly killed himself.

Look at the shadow from the B-52.Its a B-17 and was the bird that was a CIA plane for all those years.Its now owned by Evergreen in everet Washington.
