I came across an article this morning by Tim Carney of the Washington Examiner in which sees the current efforts to restrict our Second Amendment rights as another front in the culture war, a war in which the Left sees itself as morally superior to everyone else. That is, you cant have rational reasons for disagreeing with them on gun-rights issues, you must be morally wrong.
The spark for his essay is a new book by Dan Baum, whos both a Jewish liberal Democrat and a gun owner, called Gun Guys. As someone who sits in both worlds (the liberal and the gun-fan), Baum is able to understand how both sides thinks. Carney introduces Baums book with some examples of how the left sees gun enthusiasts as not just wrong, but inferior, even evil. Here are a couple:
The Posts Gene Weingarten in 2011 spat on the Second Amendment as the refuge of bumpkins and yeehaws who like to think they are protecting their homes against imagined swarthy marauders desperate to steal their flea-bitten sofas from their rotting front porches.
After Columbine, a Boston Herald op-ed described the average participant in a 1999 Boston Common pro-gun rally as a wannabe hicksville cowboy, as in way out there, somewhere off the Mass Pike or at the far reaches of 93. From towns with something to prove and lots of Amvets posts.
And President Obama in 2008 famously told a wealthy crowd at a San Francisco fundraiser that rural voters get bitter, they cling to guns or religion or antipathy toward people who arent like them
Well, the antipathy toward people who arent like them clearly is mutual.
From this, Carney segues to Baums discussion of the liberal-lefts loathing for the culture that guns represent....

If someone has a gun and is trying to kill you, it would be reasonable to shoot back with your own gun. - Tenzin Gyatso 14th Dalai Lama (Seattle Times, May 15, 2001)
Bingo!
I worked with a guy back in 85. He had gone back to college where he was convinced that all smart people were Liberal.
He was so convinced that he sold me all his guns to get them out of his house.
Marlin model 60, Marlin 30/30 lever action and a Mossberg 12 ga pump. All for $150.00.
I guess he showed me.
Spite. They abuse their own constitution out of spite for conservatives, knowing it will tick them off. For people claiming to be tolerant, they’re motivated by the most petty and negative of emotions. Class envy, the need to control others, and spite. And yet they seem to have no fear of abusive government.
That’s a good story!
Too bad you lost them in that boating accident.
There was a scene in a recent film, “The Watchmen” where one character lashes out at the “compassionate liberal”.
It was priceless.
Compassionate liberals cannot survive in the wild.

They think they're a protected species. They're wrong about that, too.
Well, I am not looking forward to the coming TEOTWAWKI event, I believe it is coming. At that time there will occur an awakening of the left, to late, but, an awakening to be sure.

I agree. And I’ll have no sympathy for them.
Trying to argue with spurious liberal morals is like seeing them trapped in a revolving door. You can never be sure whether they’re coming or going.
Wow, what a load of misinfo! Liberals have no problems with guns or using them. Their problem is that you can have them too. Anyone not of their ideology is to be ruled even at the point of a gun. Its not guns that put you in the ‘bumpkin’ class but your world view. So, guns play a major role in their ideas of society. They have elusive control of them so the ‘bumpkins’ can be herded around like cattle.

Well, THAT didn't last long.

As someone once said about a protected species, (spotted owl). Tastes like chicken.
