Asking Yourself a Question: More 'Conservative'... or 'Libertarian'?
Reaganite Republican ^ | 19 March 2013 | Reaganite Republican

Even though I agreed with much of what Ron Paul had to say, all I could ever think is 'this isn't my guy' for president -too odd a demeanor/un-electable- not to mention foreign policy positions that were appalling to a peace-through-strength Republican like myself, particularly statements made re. Iran and Israel.

But lo-and-behold, now we have fervent offspring Rand Paul who -while libertarian in his views- apparently saw wisdom in distancing himself from his father's take re. the volatile Muddled East.. and that's when I started listening to him.

Maybe I've changed in my hawkishness too- I'd rather have not been involved in Libya at all -don't want to empower jihadists in Syria- and find it pointless to back wars in Iraq and Afghanistan that I supported all the way when we're just going to hand them over to Iran or the Taliban at the end anyway.

Sooo, looking at the handy chart I found at the Libertarian Party (who I don't advocate as viable in 2016, even Rand Paul prefers working to take-over the Republican party to a 3rd-party challenge for practical reasons) you might find it useful to see right where the lines are drawn, as well as where you yourself stand as a whole in today's turbulent political cauldron...

I don't know how 'socially tolerant' I am, but if putting social issues on the back burner to ensure fiscal crises remain front+center from now through 2016, so be it. Note that the 'libertarian' overlap below appears to be a potentially appealing package as far as winning elections go...

libertarians actually view any attempts to defend the weak and helpless as a violation of the rights of the evil and powerful.

i think you just said that.

Because Libertarians remove the primacy of God from the equation, whereas our founders, started with the primacy of God and his laws as the foundation of how they setup the government.

This is what is it all about for most Conservatives. Rinos and others just want to leave God out completely so they can live without restraints.

In complete and total agreement- not real crazy about Rand Paul’s immigration stance, but YES... his is not his dad.

And this is coming from a guy who dismissed Rand as a mini-me up until three mos ago

I differ with all of what is claimed that “people on the right” believe. That seems to me to be a misidentification of many, if not most of us on the far right. It also seems to me that it is a convenient mischaracterization of conservatives by libertarians.

“I’m conservative, but the definition of conservatism that you have there is not correct. What you have there is a libertarian’s view of a conservative.”

And look at post #2, to get a conservative’s view of a libertatian.

Sounds like you've made your choice. Sow the wind, reap the whirlwind. God will not be mocked.

Libertarians do not believe in a “Robust National Defense.”

Utterly moronic statement. They don't believe in us being the UN's lapdog and playing globo-cop. If you think that is "National defense"... You've got bigger issues.

Do we even need to get around to the differences between libertarians and the GOP on guns and the militia? Especially with your boy Boehner up there capitulating on gun control bills?

Nice going Ace...

do you believe a swat team should raid your home because there might be a joint in it?

if your answer is yes, then you do not believe in personal freedom...

God is up to you. I don’t want my God coming from my government.

So you don’’t like the way our Forefathers had God’s name all over our founding documents; the Declaration of Independence.....? Where did our laws come from in the first place? Don’t murder, don’t steal....Even leftist historians acknowledge that laws came from the Torah/bible.

I will NEVER vote for a libertarian.

I’m putting this out there primarily to see what the FReepers think."

Here's my two cents.

If I'm expected to shut up about abortion, amnesty, and sodomite marriage in order to win elections, they'll have to be won without me.

Hey liberaltarian dingleberry (you started the name calling), did you agree with Cato and Reason that defeating the Taliban in Afghanistan was wrong?

Which God? Your God? My God?

How many other philosophies come up with reasons to eschew murder, rape, and theft?

You don’t want a free Country with real liberty as envisioned by the Founders. You just want to change the name-plate on the Kings desk.

W was a social conservative who vastly increased the size, scope and cist of the federal government. Santorum the same also. When he started talking about banning porn....his campaign was toast.
Social conservatives also rallied to Akins defence and he single handedly set the pro life movement back with young woman for years.

The graphic is a complete crock!

Those on the Left do not believe in:

1) Personal freedom. - They believe that people should have whatever freedoms THEY would like us to have. Conservatives defend personal freedoms.

2) Non-interventionist foreign policy. Almost all wars America has fought in the past 100 years (whether right or wrong) have been mainly or entirely under Democrat presidents. I don’t think either side is inherently more prone to intervention, it depends upon the situation.

3) Tolerance of personal choice? If someone chooses to homeschool their children, express their faith publicly, own or carry a gun, hire whom they choose, choose not to allow homosexuals to mentor their boys, etc., the Left will crucify them. About the only “choices” the Left believe in are the “right” to choose to have sex with whomever one wants, whenever one wants, the right to choose to kill unborn babies and the right to choose to either work or not work and live a lavish lifestyle off the labor of those who do work.

4) Ending corporate welfare. The Left supports all sort of corporate welfare such as bailout of union ruined automakers, “green” energy funding, tax credit for electric cars, public/private housing and other projects.

5) Civil liberties and privacy? You’ve got to be kidding. The left wants to control how big our soda cups our, how many rounds we can have in our magazines (if they allow us guns at all), and what opinions we are allowed to have.

On the other side. Conservatives do not believe in:

1) Government imposed morality. Opposing murder (whether unborn children, born children or adults) is not government imposed morality, but protecting the most fundamental right, the right to life. Opposing fake “marriages” that fly in the face of biology, sociology, history and common sense, is not “imposing morality” it is maintaining a modicum of common sense.

2) Nation building. Real conservatives generally do not support this.

3) War on drugs - there is mixed opinon on this and I think it depends upon what one means by the term.

4) Patriot Act - real conservatives oppose much of the Patriot Act. I’d say there is about the same amount of support of the PA across the political spectrum. Some on the right and left love it, others on both sides hate it.

5) Taxpaer funding for faith based charities. Conservatives generally oppose most or all taxpayer funding for charities, but believe if this taxpayer money is going to be handed out, religious charities should not be discriminated against, and in fact, are generally the best and most efficient charities.

6) Special treatment for select corporations. Conservatives generally support a climate that is good for ALL businesses whether small, large, corporations, partnerships or sole proprietorships. It is the left that wants the government to pick winners and losers and fund certain businesses while banning others.

Here is the leftists agenda hidden behind the Libertarian Party curtain.

Libertarian Party Platform:

Throw open the borders completely; only a rare individual (terrorist, disease carrier etc.) can be kept from freedom of movement through “political boundaries”.

Homosexuals; total freedom in the military, gay marriage, adoption, child custody and everything else.

Abortion; zero restrictions or impediments.

Pornography; no restraint, no restrictions.

Drugs; Meth, Heroin, Crack, and anything new that science can come up with, zero restrictions.

Advertising those drugs, prostitution, and pornography; zero restrictions.

Military Strength; minimal capabilities.

Our founders were Christians, and the God of America is the God of Abraham.

Period, end of story, no compromise.
