"The Golden Days of Yore" (My Sixtieth Birthday Vanity!)
What's left of my brain | March 7, 2013 | Charlie Henrickson (me)

THE GOLDEN DAYS OF YORE

Oh, the golden days of yore!
Those olden days before
My joints got all creaky,
My eyebrows went freaky,
My hair got all streaky--
Behold, the grays galore!

If truth is to be told,
My youth has turned to mold;
My doctor can't fix me,
The future afflicts me,
Today I turn SIXTY--
Now that sounds really old!

60? When I was sixty I wanted to celebrate with 3 20’s, but my wife locked me up in a room. I tried for 2 35’s when I was 70, but it only got me back in the room again. :o(

What was your political persuasion in 1970?

In 1970 I graduated from high school and started college. I grew my hair down to my shoulders, I had a scraggly beard and wire-rimmed glasses, and I was . . . a conservative Republican! And on top of that, I had lived my whole life in the city of Chicago, in the city, and still I was a conservative Republican. I was a big Nixon supporter in 1968, even though I was too young to vote. In 1972, for my first vote, I voted for Nixon. I've only voted for Republicans ever since.

What is the largest tree in America?

Laden or unladen?

The Mendocino tree (Sequoia) or the General Sherman (Giant Sequoia)?

I went backpacking in Sequoia National Park, twice, but that was a long time ago. I've seen the General Sherman tree, and that was pretty big, so I'll say the General Sherman tree.

How refreshing! A conservative from Chicago in 1970. Almost unheard of. Happy Birthday!

Lot of benefits to being mature. You get all those senior discounts.

Any in particular that kick in when you turn 60? I remember when I turned 55, I could order off the senior menu at Perkins.

“I’ll say the General Sherman tree...”

Sounds good to me! LOL! I hope you plan something special... something you really like. A good steak dinner? A cake or dessert you really enjoy.. something to mark this day as super special. Happy Birthday!

What kind of cake are you having?

I'm going down to my church to lead a devotion for the Ladies' Guild at 11:30. There will be cake, I'm sure of that. The church president's wife also has a March 7th birthday, you see. ;^)

Will you have a special dinner?

Sunday afternoon-evening we're having a big birthday bash at the house. More than 30 people are coming over. On the evite invite I wrote:

An Unexpected Party
Charlie's Fifty-tenth Birthday

No fireworks, but there may be smoke rings.

Will I ever lose the 10 pounds I received for my 60th birthday, 3 months ago? Happy healthy 60th!

You win the feeling of being uber smart. No feeling like it in the world. Or, you can have a cookie. Which one do you prefer?!

Happy Birthday and welcome to the club. I turned 60 this past November. It’s definitely a tough one.

Congratulations!

I passed that milestone 12 years ago and all my life I thought about someday turning 60 but I never gave a thought to the day after.

On my 6oth birthday I fell down the stairs and could easily have killed myself. I have tried to look at every day since that fall as a gift from God. Every day is a gift, of course, but I think I took all the others for granted.

When you're sixty, you say, "Did you hear something just now?"
