Obama knows this and that’s why he is campaigning so hard to destroy the GOP short term - at least long enough to get the House back in 2014. With control of all three houses, even though he is a lame duck from 2014-2016, all kinds of havoc can be wreaked.
He has to keep the media at bay until the midterms are over. After that, it no longer matters.
