Campuses would be safer if more universities disarmed their students, said some college presidents who attended a conference Monday on reducing school violence.
The annual meeting of the National Association of Independent Colleges and Universities was attended by Education Secretary Arne Duncan, and college presidents from around the country. One speaker, Oglethorpe University President Lawrence Schall, argued that the best way to reduce campus violence is to prohibit students and faculty from carrying guns.
We believe that more guns makes us less safe, not more safe, he said in a speech.
Schall is the author of an open letter to legislators urging them to oppose legislation allowing guns on our campuses and in our classrooms. Over 350 college presidents have signed the letter.
Such legislation prevailed most recently in the state of Colorado, where proponents of concealed carry laws have argued that instead of making people safer, campus gun bans actually put everyone at greater risk...

The right of self defense does not end just because person walks into a college professor’s presence, a campus classroom, or otherwise enter a public building or location. It no more ends that the right to carry a book or newspaper or bible.
What’s the difference between the Yale Police Department and the New Haven Police Department (NHPD)? Who should I call?
YPD officers patrol campus and the area immediately surrounding it, while NHPD has jurisdiction for the entire City. Both police forces are comprised of armed officers with full arrest powers.
In case of an emergency always call 911, the call will go to either YPD or NHPD depending on your location. Either way, there will be a response to your location, either by the YPD alone or a joint response. To reach the YPD directly for routine non-emergencies call 203-432-4400.

Will they restrict the Police and security people from carrying as well> It would be the same thing as Andrew Coma not exempting police from having high capacity magazines in NY.
Why don’t they go all the way and force the students to wear bulls eyes.
If he really believes this, he should apply it to law enforcement on his campus as well.
Right - more “Gun Free Zone” signs. That sure worked at VTec.
He says they feel safer without guns so why let the police carry them.
Most students are as safe carrying guns as police officers and the ones who decide to come in shooting will only carry them the day they start shooting.Who will stop them?
More evidence that logic and common sense are absent from those running our colleges and universities. Gives credence to the phrase, “educated idiots.”
Our students probably would get better educations if most college presidents resigned.
There should be a caveat attached to the effect that colleges which implement a gun ban should held responsible and be open to suit by students who are the victim of an attack by gun taking place on campus.
Great idea-then there can be a contest among all the gun free campuses for a mass shooting of the month award...
If I wre a student in todays world, I wouldn’t consider going to a college that was a gun free zone for my higher education...
Although guns had been banned on campus ever since a fellow blew his brains out in a dormitory, after this shooting enforcement became very lax and you could tell there were gun toting students on campus. They'd come to fear the roving terrorist killers more than the corrupt campus administration. (That was in the days of Miles Brand ~ who is now dead)
When the schools fail to make campus safe it's morally correct for the students to do so.
While they’re at it how about banning college football to cut back on concussions?
Or banning abortions by students to avoid indiscriminate homicide?
Oh that’s a Constitutional right? Lemme see...hum..I do not see “abortion” mentioned but I sure see fire ARMS listed explicitly.
I’m betting more are carrying - problem is, if they stop a shooter they’re the ones who’ll be in trouble and expelled.
If not, by what logic does having a LEO with a gun increase safety, while a citizen with a gun increase danger?
And I would drop the "educated" ...
Better to be expelled than to be out there pumping out your last ounce of blood on the pavement.
