In 2011, 70 or 75% of all the murder VICTIMS in Chicago had previous arrest records. THAT is why people don’t care. Bad guys killing bad guys doesn’t make most people upset. IIRC, almost all the murders in Chicago also took place in about 10-15% of the city’s area. Most people avoid the bad areas, and are thus unaffected.
She clarified the whole issue. Makes a lot more sense.
> You have random violence — inner cities, gang bangers, Chicago.
> Mass killings by people who are mentally ill — Columbine, etc.
Mass killings are an extremely small percentage of overall gun violence but get the most media attention.
You can make a reasonable argument that a gun ban will not help the inner city problem because criminals do not respect the rule of law.
unfortunately, the bad guys don’t just kill other bad guys. We recently attended services for a local business owner who was shot dead by three punks as he closed up shop for the day. They thought he would be walking out with the day’s receipts. He didn’t. They demanded the money regardless. When he couldn’t comply, they killed him. I think one of them is still at large. His story is not an anomaly. Another man was recently stabbed to death in front of a local hospital (with a screwdriver I believe) in a botched mugging. The mugger got a few dollars. Recently my city mourned another business owner who ran a convenience store a few blocks from where I now sit. He was murdered for the cash in the register. I am an ER nurse. I meet all kinds of good guy victims. Met one a while back that was beaten severely. He was beaten severely. As I recall, the perp actually stepped on his chest as he walked out the door with the cash register. The victim had multiple facial bone fractures. These are all black on white crime stories btw and I could tell you many many more.
