Are we supposed to surmise that his employees are so stupid they didn’t know what a hypocrite he is (and always has been)?

I honestly don’t understand how anybody could be surprised by Al’s actions. The guy has been a hypocritical asshole as far back as I can remember. Al wants to force people to live with a lower standard of living so he could get rich off them and live like a king. He is real scumbag.
