“Can you prove that any of your prepping will make you and yours better off that the non-preppers?.....”

I’ve come to one conclusion—if SHTF comes, I want to be best buddies with folks such as ‘Kartographer”!

1raider1?..... well, not so much.

I went on a climbing trip to Cho Oyu from the Tibet side. The “Peoples Liberation Army” of China pointed guns to get me to stand in line, a line of people including me. From what I saw they brutalized the people of Tibet. The same Zer0 believers here are no different.

Went to do some restocking this week.

We always buy bars of Ivory soap in bulk packs at either BJ’s or Sams Club.

Why Ivory?
Ivory is pure soap - no perfumes, etc. - and in a SHTF scenario can be used for just about any cleaning or washing task: Bathing, dish washing, laundry....

This week we couldn’t find Ivory at either BJ’s or Sams.
And none of the help there seemed to know why they have dropped the product.

Now we have to find a new source or buy one or two bars at a time at retail stores.
If we knew this was going to happen we would have saved our stock of Ivory and used up other brands.

"4 or 5 people on a farm would be easy to overtake by a well disciplined group. Especially if a couple are caught out working in the fields."

And here's a typical example of contemporary, suburbanite discipline.

Burning AK47 - 300 Rounds & on Fire - YouTube
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eNAohtjG14c

No problem for the "4 or 5 people on a farm." ;-)

And in the event of economic or wartime disaster, fuel for long drives would most likely be hard to come by. City folks would stay in the cities (see also gridlock, roadblocks, dangers of walking through other neighborhoods, etc.)

There will probably be "civil unrest" in at least some of the cities. But mostly, many people who aren't accustomed to doing much real work (bureaucrats and the like) will find out what it's like to get really poor (re. default ahead).

There won't be any grand, awesome adventure "as seen on TV," IMO. ...only a bond collapse, more widespread poverty and much smaller government ahead (spending, lack of real domestic manufacturing, lack of value in currency from "money printing," and so on).

If you don’t prepare, then prepare for your new domicile in the “FEMA” (it’s for your own good, we’re just trying to help, we’re making the best out of a bad situation, bend over and grab your ankles, etc.) Camps!

Your comparison is a poor one.

For the white population in Rhodesia, SHTF came when Carter forced South Africa to withdraw their support of Rhodesia, and Mugabe and his ZANLA thugs stole the election. The only “prepping” to do at that point was to liquidate your holdings and get the hell out...which literally began the very next day. Those who stayed behind, and are currently facing the wrath of Mugabe’s goons, are closer to the “non-preppers” you cite.

And many of the farmers and rural dwellers did, in fact, stock some supplies and arms against natural disasters and guerilla raids.

“I live in the USA, so instead of individual effort, I am as bad off as every one else. Can you spare a dime or $1K. I promise not to give you anything back, but audits and grief like Zer0 does.”

Nah, those words show you are smart. Just use, “Can you spare a dime or a drink of water?”

I am so old, no one would think I would have anythiing worthwhile, and certainly not a gun and ammo. “Could you spare a can of soup for me?” That’s my story and I’m sticking to it.

I’m in the suburbs and I know exactly how I’d take out a farm if I had too. There are many many people in the suburbs with military training.

Of course I’m not the kind of person you’d have to worry about.

Like I said, it depends on what happens. Way too many variables to account for. If I had the money I’d move somewhere more remote. I don’t so I’ll make do and hope for the best. I just don’t think anyone is going to get a free pass.

Use of antibiotics will put you out of action quickly.

Learn to use more effective things like fresh garlic, oregano oil, tea tree oil, etc. They won’t derail your immune system like antibiotics will.

Your prepper items can also be used during short term fiscal problems. And due to our current depression, many, many people have had short term fiscal problems. So many, many people already know that prepping has already helped them.

“There will probably be “civil unrest” in at least some of the cities.”

I hope you’re correct in that its limited to minor unrest. Having lived through several hurricanes I don’t agree. Things can go bad very quickly even with a minor hurricane. Criminals seem to like those times to take advantage of others and lots of people do crazy stuff.

BTW, I watched that video. I can’t believe anyone in their right mind would treat a class III weapon like that. They are way too valuable to intentionally destroy.

>> “Start with 200 million firearms in private hands.” <<

.
That estimate is 22 years old.

More than 100 million firearms have been sold since Obama took office. 500 million or more private arms are a better guess.

Medications, especially pain meds and antibiotics, birth control pills, and life-saving drugs like cardiac medications, will be worth more than jewels. Alas, I’m too poor to buy gold or lay away reserves of money, but sometimes I can get medication, and I’m stashing it.

“Are you a closet communist? Have you ever held a private sector job???? Do your subjects appreciate you? Will you be my subject? I could make you truly miserable while I laugh while I pull the strings, instead of the other way around!”

1. Communist? What is that? Old lady like me doesn’t know.
2. “...held a private sector job?” Is a private sector like a certain part of town?
3. “Do your subjects appreciate you?” I took a lot of subjects in school and I liked them.
4. “Will I be your subject?” What do you teach?
5. “I could make you truly miserable...” I guess you aren’t going to give me a can of soup?

Old ladies like me are kind of nuts. You wouldn’t live very long if you touched my door or window.

First thing you can expect is for the police to declare curfews. I know that the MAYORS are the ones to do this but here in Rat infested Houston, the Mayor (Bill White) imposed a curfew of 3 days that was extended to a week by the Chief of Police with no authority to do so and no challenge to his extension.

I stand corrected. I did more poking around and even called a Secret Service friend of mine. 200,000,000 is way low.

Best I can tell is no one knows the actual number, but the SS friend said they are told it is likely somewhere north of 350,000,000.

Picture this:

Twenty-something going off to be “volunteer staff” at some comic convention. They get room and board, free attendance, tee shirts, etc.

Mother says: Take some food with you.

He replies: This convention provides really well, I’ve worked it before.

Mother says: Here is a short list, I’ll buy, you go get this stuff and take it in your backpack.

He gets half of the stuff on the list.

Comes home (after four nights) starved.

Said the food provided by the convention was OK, but not enough, nor enough fats and carbs. He was soooo glad he brought along the food I suggested.

Mother then feeds twenty-something big home-cooked meal.

I guarantee that is the last time I will have to convince him to bring ADEQUATE trip food along.

Prepping is a fluid discipline.

“...the Mayor (Bill White) imposed a curfew of 3 days that was extended to a week by the Chief of Police with no authority to do so and no challenge to his extension.”

Perhaps the chief did ask White for an extension.

That hurricane got me, too, no power north of Houston - but I had a working TV due to preps, and watched White’s daily news briefs. I thought he did a good job. He was dealing with many problems but he got it done.

What blew me away about Houston, was, the minute the hurricane passed, lots of people wanted free water, ice and food. They couldn’t wait to get in a FEMA line. Those are the people who will die in a total US emergency.
