Terri List says she would tell her students not to become a teacher in Michigan.
Why?
One of the reasons is because the Saginaw Township Community School District English teacher won’t be able to retire at age 47 as she has hoped.
List was highlighted by the Michigan Education Association as one of the critics of Senate Bill 1040, which would require public school employees to contribute at least 5 percent of their compensation to their retirement plan.
The MEA reported on its website: "Saginaw Township teacher Terry (sic) List had hoped to retire in the next three years when she was 47 years old. That wouldn’t be possible under SB 1040. List would have to work another 16 years to be eligible for health benefits."
“By the time I’m 60, I would have put in 43 years of service, earning a salary at the top of the pay scale. How does that save the district money? You could hire two people for the cost of one and encourage young people to join the profession. Right now, I would not recommend to my pupils to become a teacher in Michigan.”
List didn’t respond to an email seeking comment.
According to the school’s most recent teacher’s contract, List earns between $70,000 and $80,000 a year depending upon her level of education. Factor in expected pay raises over the next 15 years and it’s likely List would make more than $90,000 by the time she retires, said Michael Van Beek, education policy director at the Mackinac Center for Public Policy.
Van Beek estimated List’s pension would be $60,000 a year in retirement and it would increase 3 percent a year and she would get health benefits when she retired at age 60. Van Beek also said that it is likely that List bought “years of service” because she said she would have 43 years of service by age 60. Van Beek said that practice is basically extinct in the private sector.
Leon Drolet, chairman of the Michigan Taxpayers Alliance, called List’s comments “amazing.”
“Wow. They have reached the politicians’ level of entitlement,” Drolet said. “She thinks she is entitled to retire at 47? Holy smokes. I don’t know what more to say to that. A government employee thinking that 47 is a reasonable expectation to retire shows just how deep inside their own bubble they live, insulated from the real world.”
Charles Owens, president of the Michigan chapter of the National Federation of Independent Business, said tongue-in-cheek that List was “spot on” in her complaint.
“If you want to retire if you are 47, apparently teaching is not the place to go,” Owens said. “The least Terri could do is provide a list of places other people could go so they can retire when they are 47.”
No one working for the government should be able to collect retirement untill they actually reach retirement. Even military, unless medical.
Sorry, but if you can worked, you should work. The idea of retirement was for financial security when your body couldn’t do that. retirement was supposed to last a couple years, not a couple decades.
The human body isn’t designed to retirement.
I know a man who retired from fire rescue as early as possible, who’s body went to crap. Her couldn’t walk far at all. I know another who waited until 84, and his mind was still in great shape, and body better than most 60 yo. Her only retired because of his wife.
I know which one I want to emulate.

THe concept of 1 calendar year not being equal to a service year is very foriegn to me. It should be foreign to this country. I’m wondering if they do the same thing with SSI. All refugees from favored hell-holes of the moment get 20 years of maximum payment history to SSI. Some pigs are more equal after all.
Funny thing is, whenever I hear two or more government trough pigs talking, invariably the subject of maximizing retirement benefits, and minimizing time on the job takes precedence. Why do they never complain about taxes, like all the private sector people? Not taxes, revenue in Government speak.
If her deal sucks so bad, she ought to quit. Friggin’ ridiculous.
Also many fire and police department unions allow for retirement at 47 with some fine lifetime benefits.
There is a better less expensive way in the long run... Home school.
Can someone retired from the military explain how this works?
As to your friend, you said USNR, I am pretty sure the 20 yr retirement was for Active only - but I do think if you were a reserve on active and went Regular, you could get into the 20 yr ret system with prior active time retro.
For the military, basically if you’re on continuous active duty for 20 years, you can retire at the 20-year mark and get your full pension for the rest of your life.
There are a few federal civilian specialties that have a similar system. In the Foreign Service, for example, you can retire with a full pension if you have at least 20 years’ service and you’re age 50 or older. The FAA air traffic controllers have a similar arrangement. These specialized government jobs are a very tiny minority of the federal civil service. Civil service pensions only begin once you reach the minimum retirement age, which I believe is 62 (i.e., the age when you can begin to collect a reduced Social Security payment).
47 seriously? And only 30 years in at 60? She should try the real world! My hubby had 30 years in on the job at age in 2007 at the ripe old age of 49. Even though he is qualified with years in to retire he isn’t old enough and won’t be until he is at least 55 and he is not ready to retire then.Who in their right minds would want to lock in a fixed income right now with inflation setting in?

another reason the fed. govt and thus we the citizens are totally bankrupt....giving pensions to people in their 40’s, or even in their 30’s as some military do....insanity....

people should be able to be active for 6 -8 yrs, then have the opportunity if they wanted to be in the guard or reserve,and pick up a reasonable,sane pension at age 60....
but no more lifers...its just insane to continue this system the way it is now...
Right! Air traffic controllers... I know a couple who were both ATC’s... One retired in her 40’s and the husband retired about 10 yrs. later.
Are you saying that people that serve for 28 years active duty through WWII occupation, two wars (Korea and Vietnam) shouldn’t have the ability to retire?
So you want no one in the military with more than 8 years experience?
