Got lucky when I bought I guess. We're in one of the higher elevations in the county. On a clear day I can see the Sears Tower from my backyard. The 4 lane running east slopes down and away for over a mile.
And I'm done running, friend Gonzo. If they make it out my way they're gonna pay for every single yard.

Amen, Lurker... I know many friends and family in the ‘burbs that feel the same. So if it helps, you are definitely not alone. However, be warned that even back in late 80s/early 90s the gangs were creeping into even the “richest” suburbs, and I hear it’s gotten worse from those who are actually among the ones who SEE it all around them. I haven’t lived there since the late 90s so I don’t know what areas they’ve been driven out of or taken over since I left - at all. I know some areas as far out as Prospect Heights, and Mt. Prospect that if the SHTF will NOT be safe (but most who live there know which areas these are already - it’s not a *new* threat).
Sounds like this is way more serious than anything I ever heard of or witnessed growing up there (and I remember the late 70s). I remember the crackdowns on gangs in the city, etc... I think Rahm et al. have created a perfect storm in Chicago now, and they really don’t care exactly how it turns out as long as there are a lot of people suffering, and they can then use the footage to even further provoke MORE violence and suffering.
Anyway, praying for all of you down there - family, friends, and a couple of Chicago’s Finest as well (btw - the cops HATE Emmanuel and last year there was talk about how the changes he has made would make a situation like this 1,000 times worse).
