There are few walks of life nobler or more rewarding than a military career. Military personnel work long, arduous hours, often under intense stress and in extreme danger to their own life and limb. They spend months away from their loved ones while on call 24/7 in an intensely unsafe and unfriendly environment. In return, they receive low pay and lose many of the freedoms of choice they take an oath to protect, freedoms the rest of us take for granted.
Ive been proud of my country, and especially its military, from the time I was a small boy, when such feelings were commonplace and expected. Today, theyre often ridiculed as old-fashioned. Its for that reason I was saddened to learn of a shameful statistic reported in The New York Times recently: For every soldier killed on the battlefield this year, about 25 veterans are dying by their own hands.

No need to bother now - he only has a few months left :)
Every ten year old American kid growing up in America knows how to salute. They also know American kids don’t eat Old Yeller.
What are you talking about? The communist knows how to salute, he gave the middle finger to John McCain and others. Why would you even call the commie usurper fraud and forger a “president”.
Our admirals and generals have failed us.
Your lips to God’s ears!
I know the author was speaking metaphorically, at least in general terms. However, I am amazed at the number of folks who try to salute; either on TV, or as President, who do not take the five minutes to learn how to do it.
I recall being on the Upper Parade ground 30 some years ago, being taught to give a proper salute. It took all of half an hour to teach 500 kids how to do it. The smartest man in the world should understand how to do it.
Also, am I the only one that wanted to break John Kerry’s arm when he tried to salute. It looked like he was waving at the steamship going down the Mississippi. I was never going to vote for him anyway....but jeeze! And I hear he was a vet!
It is a pet peeve of mine that my kids have tired of hearing from me.
Very good! Especially your first two paragraphs!
Those that disrespect those that protect and defend our freedoms, despise their own liberty!
Actually, if I’m not mistaken, Presidents didn’t salute troops up until Reagan, I think he started that trend.
I’m no fan of Obama, but based on what I know, I don’t think he’s doing anything wrong by not Saluting.
You mean our perfumed princes and princesses at the Pentagon?
When Clinton was first elected, his "salutes" were really sloppy. Then someone in the WH got smart, and spent about 10 minutes showing him how to do so...
No he doesn’t, historically REAGAN was the first President to return salutes... No Civilian, not even the Commander in Chief is required to deliver or return a salute.
I understand what you are trying to say, but respectfully you are wrong.
Reagan was the first President EVER to return Salutes to the troops in daily matters. in fact when he first did it in 1981 it caused a bit of an controversey.
I hate Obama and all he stands for, and while he may be disrespectful to the military, if you are going to argue the president must return a salute you are wrong. Not even Dwight D Eisenhower and Military man himself returned salutes when President.
OBama is a disrespectful a$$ but on this matter he isn’t violating protocol or law by failing to return a salute made to him.
The problem is that that this president salutes the military with the middle finger of his left forepaw!
Jackwagon's from the far left faculty-lounge culture and snapping a decent salute would violate his hate-America creed.
Barry can't figure out what went wrong The people aren't singing his song Well, here is the gist The people are p...ed And we'll vote him out before long
Is he really supposed to return salutes, considering he’s not in uniform? In the Marines we were taught that it was fine to salute an officer if he was in civilian clothes and you recognized him - it was even considered somewhat of a compliment. But they weren’t allowed to return the salute when not in uniform. Instead what you usually got was a sincere and grateful “Good Morning!” or “Good Afternoon!” - it was one of the few times I actually saw officers smile sincerely and with gratitude for the compliment they’d received from the saluting Marine.
This was a precursor for when obama talked about that Navy CORPSE-man.
It must be something in the water that they drink. OOPS...perhaps I should say Big Mac's in Clinton's case and and KFC and FIDO, in obama's.
“Its for that reason I was saddened to learn of a shameful statistic reported in The New York Times recently: For every soldier killed on the battlefield this year, about 25 veterans are dying by their own hands.”
Hunh? Where did this stat come from? I’m tempted to call Bravo Sierra.
Amen to that!
