Is that a sufficient reason to deny statehood? Of course, U.S. history shows that states are created for political reasons.

Just what we need: another welfare state. That'll make 58, won't it (according to
0bummer's math)?

I think the rest of us should have some say in this too.

It makes sense for puerto ricans to pay taxes, follow environmental lead laws, put wheelchair lifts at their swimming pools, drive electric cars, have their electric bills necessarily skyrocket, and become commies.

I really do not think Puerto Ricans will give up their commonwealth status. Will all those tax advantages go poof once statehood becomes a reality.

If only a third want statehood then that would be a good reason, do you think they should also be forced?

Majority of people there make about 10k a year and wouldn’t pay taxes any how. It would screw over the wealthier ones though.

Bad idea, but the law says it is up to the Puerto Ricans, not the rest of us. Congress has long since abdicated responsibility for decisions on PR statehood. I think it will be economically fine for PR, a great sucking sound for the rest of the US, and will do severe harm to the economy.
But whatever--it is up to them, if they want statehood they can get it.

Sorry, Congress sold out our stake in this decision long ago.
