Santorum Leads In Washington ["Gingrich's Continued Presence In The State Is A Boost To Romney"]

Santorum Leads In Washington

Wedged between the Michigan/Arizona primaries and Super Tuesday the Washington state GOP caucus hasn't received a lot of attention. At least for now it looks like it could give Rick Santorum some momentum headed into the critical March 6th contests. He leads there with 38% to 27% for Mitt Romney, 15% for Ron Paul, and 12% for Newt Gingrich.

Santorum is by far the most popular of the Republican candidates with 69% viewing him favorably to only 18% with a negative opinion. Romney is the only other one who even has a positive favorability rating. He's at 47/42. The disparity between Santorum and Romney's numbers in Washington resembles what we found for the contests two weeks ago in Missouri and Minnesota, both of which Santorum ended up winning by a healthy margin.

Next week looks like it could be disastrous for Gingrich. He's in 4th place in both Washington and Michigan, and in 3rd place in Arizona. He's not remotely close to finishing in the top 2 in any of those states. It's not just that Republican voters aren't planning to vote for Gingrich, they don't even like him any more. In Washington his favorability is upside down at 39/46 and the same is true in Michigan (39/50) and Arizona (43/48) as well.

Gingrich's continued presence in the state is a boost to Romney. If he pulled out before Washington 59% of his supporters say they'd move to Santorum, compared to only 13% who would go to Romney. That would make the overall standings Santorum 49, Romney 28, Paul 16- as long as Gingrich stays in and keeps splitting the conservative vote it's keeping Romney competitive.

PPP surveyed 400 likely Washington caucus voters between February 16th and 19th.

Polls does not show the fluidness of this election. Too old.

It shows the high watermark for Santo. What we want to see is from the AZ Debate onward of polls if Santorum can stand up to criticism that he never received the months before when he was 4th or 5th or 6th in the polls.

Unrelated, but I'd be interested to see if Paul's favorability ratings hold. Paul called Santorum a “fake” in the debate. Name calling usually has blowback, although it may not be relevant with Paul supporters.

Yes, Gingrich cleared the decks for Santorum to be the one to take on Romney. The guy is a gentleman.

Arguing for Mr. Rogers as the better candidate is like choking up hairballs.

All this handwringing and concern about Newt Gingrich, by worried ole Steelfish, when in fact, both Romney and Paul have Virginia all to themselves!

I try to keep up with this great delegate chart.

Newt still in 2nd place - Romney should not have all 50 Florida delegates - GOPE changing the rules for Romney.

It wasn’t disasterous for any of the candidates.

Thank you very much, dear sod!

These silly calls for Newt Gingrich to drop out are silly, beyond silly.

I tried telling Steelfish on another thread, it’s all about “delegates”, NOT polls.

Don’t kid yourself. Newt isn’t the “only chance”, although I’d certainly vote for him.

Obama is defeating himself. If we hit $5-$6 gas for a while even RP could beat Obamalini.

there is a sudden interest in getting Newt out of the way by Santorum folks, when Santorum just flubbed the last debate won by Newt - and more and more folks are realizing the real vote count, etc.

Hey, I’ll admit it was foolish of Newt to ask Santorum to step aside when he did - and for the same reason now - the same advice would be equally as foolish coming from the other side.

Depressing ain’t it?

Pondering that Newt never had a ‘grand scheme’ or huge ego to run for POTUS - but did so in order to start a critical conversation which would encourage strong contenders. I honestly believe he would have stepped aside had someone shown the necessary talent, experience and leadership. Suspect he was like most of us - waiting for Palin - liked Perry and Cain - and had to step up and take charge against Romney. Santorum’s ‘surge’ is a surprise - but still too green and self-absorbed IMHO. This is not the time for a freshman - we need a Professor.

Right there with you, onyx! I was so apparent during the debate who our candidate should be. The person we choose needs to be able to think fast on his as the Obama team with rig any debates they agree to.

To quote a line from a favorite movie of my husband and son....."There can be only one!"

There is still a lot of water to flow before we can declare anyone the true front runner. After Super Tuesday we'll have about 35% of the delegates having been in some sort of selection process and then the herd may become better defined.

Candidate Popular

Romney, Willard "Mitt" 1,185,522  38.84% 87   4.82% 20   4.17% 107   4.68% 73   3.19%
Gingrich, Newton Leroy "Newt" 838,882  27.49% 33   1.83% 10   2.08% 43   1.88% 29   1.27%
Santorum, Richard J. "Rick" 570,834  18.70% 16   0.89% 27   5.62% 43   1.88% 3   0.13%
Paul, Ronald E. "Ron" 338,564  11.09% 12   0.66% 23   4.79% 35   1.53% 8   0.35%

There are about 3% of the popular vote not shown which goes to a myriad of candidates such as Bachmann, Perry, Cain, Huntsman and various unknowns.
