From the slaughter of the innocents there has always been a Herod somewhere who wants to stamp out Christ...
This is an example of the "broken window fallacy". If the custom of celebrating Christmas with vulgar commercialism had never arisen, people would instead spend the same money on other things at other times, which would if anything produce more economic benefit (since it would not have the negative side effects of crunching everything into a small sliver of the calendar).
