That is an accurate observation of Newt Gingrich's popularity. It isn't that a plurality of Tea Party supporters are in love with Gingrich. It's a fear that the other declared candidates would give Obama reelection.

I don't know if a Republican nominee can win solely based upon being an opponent to Obama. It seems to me that our nominee will have to generate support of his own, regardless of who his opponent is.

Still undecided, I can't help but feel that Gingrich's support is fairly shallow (at this point), and that could change. It's up to him to continue to try to earn my support.

I don't think you understand the tea party at all. The tea party is attracted to Newt because he offers a candidacy based on more than simplistic slogans and wind-vane solutions.

When Newt talks, it is clear that he fully understands the subject about which he is speaking. It is clear that he has spent the time necessary to study the problem from all sides, understand the causes of the problem, and come up with one well thought out solution. It may not be the only solution or even the best solution, but it is based in solid, rational evaluation and study. It is also clear that he is not wedded to any one solution and is open to better ideas if anyone has such to offer.

Newt is a refreshing change from candidates who think in sound bytes and have only a cursory knowledge of our history and the complexity of the problems we face.

That is the basis of his growing support.

As PALIN SMITH said on another thread, Newt is "a man who might be more comfortable at Independence Hall." None of the others come close.

I should have also added that I believe you are right. Newt's support is probably shallow (though I think it is beginning to deepen) as it should be. I do not believe that any careful, rational person should become to closely attached to any one candidate too early. I think that has been one of the most glaring problems to become evident in the early debates and on this forum.

I will make my final decision as to whom I give my support when I believe I am well enough informed to make an informed decision. . . not one second before.
