I don't think you understand the tea party at all. The tea party is attracted to Newt because he offers a candidacy based on more than simplistic slogans and wind-vane solutions.

When Newt talks, it is clear that he fully understands the subject about which he is speaking. It is clear that he has spent the time necessary to study the problem from all sides, understand the causes of the problem, and come up with one well thought out solution. It may not be the only solution or even the best solution, but it is based in solid, rational evaluation and study. It is also clear that he is not wedded to any one solution and is open to better ideas if anyone has such to offer.

Newt is a refreshing change from candidates who think in sound bytes and have only a cursory knowledge of our history and the complexity of the problems we face.

That is the basis of his growing support.

As PALIN SMITH said on another thread, Newt is "a man who might be more comfortable at Independence Hall." None of the others come close.

No doubt he is one of the brightest of the bunch and an excellent debater. The problems I still have with Gingrich are some of his past statements and positions and even a couple of current statements. His illegal immigration statement troubled me as his did his defense of his past position on man made global warming. But, most notable was his slamming of the Tea Party in his endorsement of Dede Scozzafava. To me, this screamed of “establishment Republican” and was very similar to some other “Republicans” who blasted the Tea Party over Mike Castle's defeat.

I guess I'm still skeptical of who Gingrich truly is and will remain undecided (on him) until he puts my suspicions to rest. Perhaps if I weren't a Tea Party supporter I would fall in line with the plurality.

My biggest fear is that should Gingrich win the nomination, he will run to the left and antagonize Conservatives. Should that happen, much like John McCain, we could be looking at four more years (at least) of Obama.
