If you live in Ottawa and would like to join us for a Christmas Lunch, we've got some very interesting hosts ~snip~ We had arranged for Brian Lilley to speak to us (he's the host of SunTV's show, "Byline") but with the very sad news that Brian Lilley had lost his father last week, forcing him to cancel his promised engagement with Canadians for Language Fairness, came an unexpected challenge of finding a last minute replacement.
Incredibly, Michael Coren, best selling author who has hosted his own TV show for years and is now host of The Arena on Sun News channel, offered his crowd-drawing, intellectual insights to Canadians for Language Fairness.
He joins CFRA's Nick Vandergragt and Russell Township's Jean-Serge Brisson as our guest speakers on Saturday, December 10, 2011 at noon, at the Mandarin Court Restaurant at 1374 Baseline Road in Ottawa.
So, make sure you reserve your tickets ASAP as we expect a sell-out crowd. Email Kim at kimlian@sympatico.ca or Beth at iloveblue.beth@gmail.com or call and leave message at 613-443-0490. Include your mailing address with your message so your tickets can be mailed out to you.
Spread the word and book your tickets now. Where else in town can you hear one, much less three, terrific speakers for a mere $25.00 per ticket AND eat at an all-you-can-eat Chinese buffet?
Condolences to Brian Lilley and his family.
Speakers:
Incredibly, Michael Coren, best selling author who has hosted his own TV show for years and is now host of The Arena on Sun News channel, offered his crowd-drawing, intellectual insights to Canadians for Language Fairness.
Nick Vandergragt, popular radio host on CFRA. He has his nightly show called, Nick at Night but he also has a Sunday show called, Sunnyside Nick. He often fills in for Lowell Green when Lowell is on holiday. Nick has grown in popularity over the last two years and has a very faithful listenership in Ottawa.
And
Jean-Serge Brisson, past President of the Libertarian Party, completes the slate of our speakers. Jean-Serge will be updating us on the appeal case in the legal challenge mounted by Howard Galganov and Jean Serge Brisson against the Russell Township Sign by-law. The case is due to be heard in the Appeals Court in Toronto on Wednesday, February 1, 2012. A trip is being planned to attend the hearing please let us know if you would like to join us.
Ping.
“Christmas luncheon”
Tsk, tsk. Won’t the religious commission get after them for offending muzzies now?
Nope.
Section 13 of the human rights act is being dropped. :-)
OTTAWA - Canada’s human rights commissions could soon be de-fanged.
New legislation would repeal Section 13, the hate speech portion of Human Rights Act.
Our government believes Section 13 is not an appropriate or effective means for combating hate propaganda. We believe the Criminal Code is the best vehicle to prosecute these crimes, Justice Minister Rob Nicholson told the House of Commons during question period.
I say to the opposition: get onside with the media, MacLean’s magazine, National Post, and even the Toronto Star says this section should go.
Quebecor and its media properties, including Sun News Network and QMI Agency, also want the section scrapped.
Tory backbencher Brian Storseth drafted the private member’s bill, C-304.
This is a great first step, Storseth told The Source host Ezra Levant on Sun News Network. Free speech is something we all hold very dear to our hearts and something we all have a necessity for.
~snip~
Thanks for the ping, fanfan.
Connards! Leave it alone for God's sakes. It's been so nice and quiet these past 10 years. Big deal if Les Feds require bilingualism in all offices across the country. I've gotten used to it. Alors quoi?
"...in all their offices across..."
Are you for real?
Don't rock the boat?
Don't rock it now that almost every Federal Gov. employee is a French person from Quebec?
Now that English Canadian people can't even get a retail job in Ottawa?
Now that business owners in some parts of Eastern Ontario are being FORCED to display their signage in French as well as English?
Now that the cost of “official” bilingualism to our country runs about $1.8 Billion a year?
Canada's Cost of Official Bilingualism: $1.8 billion per year

We should have stopped this 20 years ago. If not now, WHEN?
I happen to be one of those Canadians who loves Quebec and its French speaking culture, and I don't even live there. Furthermore, I believe that our relationship between the English and French languages is one of the defining aspects of the Canadian "zeitgeist". It is not without its problems. As race is to Americans, and class is to the Brits, I think that language is at or near the center of what the rest of the world sees as our being uniquely Canadian. We are well-known internationally for our peace-keeping skills, as conflict negotiators, and as arbitrators, etc. This stems from a rich history of living peacefully with those who are different.
Most of all, however, I don't want to see this great country succumb to hatred, split in two, and end up sliding into the genocidal swamp of a Bosnia/Serbia. In order for two different cultures to live together harmoniously, concessions are necessary. And yes, it gets expensive. In my opinion, the money you mentioned is money well-spent. While it may seem high to many of us now, the coming Canadian debt and monetary crisis will certainly cure the abuses; in not only this issue, but in the entire governmental system.
As far as work goes, most Federal jobs outside of Quebec demand bilingualism, yes. Are the people selected for those positions smarter than uni-English workers, or uni-French workers? Yes, they are. Smart enough to work hard and do whatever it takes to be successful.....and becoming fluently bilingual IS hard work. I applaud them, and suggest we hold them up as models of Canadian industriousness and a challenge to our education system.
Respond if you will, but we're definitely of opposing views.
To me, you seem uninformed and nieve.
I will assume it's solely the jobs and expenses that have you so obviously hot under the collar?
Solely? All jobs going to Quebecers, expenses of $2 Billion a year, and anti-English discrimination? Am I solely upset about a little thing like that?
I don't know about you, but that walks and talks like a problem to me.
Michael Coren of Sun News told me most people west of Renfrew have no idea the magnitude of this problem. Watch his show on Sun TV this week for more info.
"For example, students enrolled in French-language immersion programs in Canada still produced non-native-like grammar when they spoke, even though they had years of meaning-focused lessons and their listening skills were statistically native-level."
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Second-language_acquisition
I have no problem living peacefully with those who are different.
I'm glad you love French culture, and the “juno say quoix” it adds to your life.
Just stop expecting me to pay for it!
I don't need french on my cereal box, and to pay 10-20% more for any product because they have to add packaging and instructions in 2 languages.
I applaud them, and suggest we hold them up as models of Canadian industriousness and a challenge to our education system.
Please. That would qualify half of the illegal immigrants in California.
To you, French Canadians who can speak English are “models of Canadian industriousness” ?
In my opinion, the money you mentioned is money well-spent. While it may seem high to many of us now, the coming Canadian debt and monetary crisis will certainly cure the abuses; in not only this issue, but in the entire governmental system.
OK, so we should keep wasting 2 Billion a year until the country/world implodes?
If some where in your reply you have an actual argument FOR Official Bilingualism, I'm not seeing it.
I am glad it is finally being discussed.
December 12, 2011
Canadians for Language Fairness are very pleased to announce that our annual Christmas luncheon was an overwhelming success!
Guests had the pleasure of meeting and greeting all of our speakers, including Sun News host of THE ARENA, Michael Coren, who autographed copies of his best-selling book Why Catholics Have it Right and who talked about a variety of topics, from Islam to Human Rights Commissions. Being from the Toronto area, Michael was quickly educated on language issues in Eastern Ontario and is ready to be convinced that it is a much larger concern than he was aware of.
CFRAs Sunnyside Nick Vandergragdt had us in stitches with his tall tales, and encouraged Canadians to participate more and be more involved in fighting for our Rights and Freedoms. He also gloated about the Lunch Bunch session when he had Mauril Belanger, Liberal MP in the corner, forcing him to admit it was the British that signed the BRITISH North American (BNA) Act, not the French.
Jean-Serge Brisson finished off the afternoon talking about the Russell Township Bilingual Sign bylaw challenge that is heading to Appeal Court in Toronto on February 1, 2012. He pointed out that had France won the battle at the Plains of Abraham, Canada would have become part of the United States, like Louisiana did when the French signed the Louisiana Purchase.
An added bonus was that Michael Coren has invited Jurgen Volrath, representing the Human Rights Institute of Canada and who has been a long time language fairness advocate, to be on his show on Sun News.
Jurgen is doing the taping at noon tomorrow (December 13, 2011), so hopefully it will feature on tomorrow evening’s “THE ARENA” at 7 PM. He will be talking about the language issue in Eastern Ontario.
As was mentioned on Saturday at our luncheon, the squeaky wheel gets the grease. It is not good enough to get someone on a show talking about language.
The maximum air time allowed is eight minutes, so time is very restricted and there are so many language issues that must be exposed. We need to get invited back, and in order to accomplish that, CLF supporters MUST find the time to email, write or call Sun Media and express your desire to hear more about language issues.
If there is little response, the chances of a second invitation are slimmer. We have been given a venue by the Sun News network so let’s take the opportunity to show that there is an interest in the issue. If we want to be heard, now is the time to take action so we are heard. The time is ripe. Please do your part for Freedom of Speech.
Thanks fanfan.
