I’m unfamiliar with this airbase. I thought most (maybe all) air traffic came in through Manas in Kyrgyzstan.

Logistical support
Virtually everything needed for these forces is brought into Afghanistan primarily through Pakistan. But the rising level of violence against the ‘traditional’ resupply routes through Pakistan has left the Pentagon seeking alternatives, most notably through Central Asia.
Now that they have annoyed the Russians with the so-called defensive missile shield, perhaps Russian can close down the Northern supply routes through the Stans.
It’s a major unmanned drone base in Southwest Pakistan, technically under the control of the U.A.E., so the paki’s can say they didn’t actually give it to the US.
You have to wonder if this might not have been an accident. Were they trying to send a message to the Pakis?

My daughter has flown into Afghanistan from Qatar. She said that there was some sort of corridor agreement between the U S and Pakistan that permits overflights of Pakistani territory. Like Future Snake Eater, I’m unfamiliar with any permanent bases in Pakistan. The USAF Security Service had a base at Peshawar back in the day, but it’s long since been closed down.

We can’t survive as a fighting force if we’re dependent on Bahgram for suppllies. if we’re not looking to leave enough stuff behind to arm a small army, we’re going to have to find another way out, That will be Uzbekistan, and then by rail and road thru Russia to the Black Sea. I hope Karimov is too occupied boiling his enemies to be troubled by our arrival and let’s us pass.
The story of this base broke earlier in the year, and has been in the Arab Press for some time now.

It seems to me that money is not the issue. Rather, I think that Pakistan is adjusting to an evolving global real politik wherein US dominance is waning in favor of more hard-line islamo-fascism.
They cannot be blind to the growing influence of the MB through the various Arab Spring up-risings. We are out of Iraq in 45 days. We are staging down in Afghanistan. Why shouldn't the Pakis join the winning side?
