I’m posting from a phone and looking things up can be cumbersome. If someone would be so kind as to go to the NPR site and see if you can find the story and post a link, it may help the dicussion.
It use to go like this. You don’t work, you don’t eat. Watching your wife and children slowly starve would motivate men to earn a living for their family regardless of their skill level.
Now, the tax payer feeds their kids.
I pleased every time I see a high schooler working at the grocery store or fast food place.
My “official” work experience started when I was about 14.
Before that I mowed lawns.
From my earliest memories, we had workers from Mexico and
other “hispanics” in the fields picking crops.
When the crops were gone, they left - mostly.
We also had waves of immigrants back during WWI and later who picked crops.
Today, they stay and overwhelm us in droves - that’s the problem.
I have done such jobs as well growing up. When AZ passed its 2007 on e-verify, an amazing thing happened. US teenagers replaced the illegals at fast food restaurants. The data show that American teenagers want to work. They are just being displaced by immigrants, legal and illegal.
Ping!
And completely replaces the father :(
Welfare is the reason that there is “work that Americans won’t do”. If some uneducated lazy ass doesn’t get a check or other handout from Uncle Sucker, hunger eventually “help” them finds the balance between “won’t do” and “doesn’t want to do”.
Used to see a lot of inmate labor where I grew up as a kid. Our house was on a plot surrounded by Southern Michigan prison owned farmland.
The prisons used to feed themselves, now the taxpayers pick up the tab.

Prisons should go back to producing things and paying their way,You work, maybe time off plus some money!
Were did we get labor before illegal immigration?

Good Question. Let me relate some history.
All great civilizations have always imported their working classes. Usually slaves. America is no different. From indentured servants, to slaves to illegals.
It’s the way things are done.
Unemployment, welfare- any and all social programs should have to pay far less than one could earn at ANY job. As it is most programs pay more than many entry level jobs. No incentive to work for many.
I think truly hard times are on the way and these things will change or many just won’t make it. I was raised to work and work hard. I have done nearly every job that “they” now say only illegals will do- but I was raised by folks that survived the Great Depression and they understood that hard work can literally mean survival.
I am as guilty as many because I wanted my children to have a “better” easier life- my step-son and daughters are all hard workers for their age group- but not to the extent many of us used to be. I can still work circles around them and do many times.
In YOUR OPINION I’m a racist.
You only say that because I’m White.
Anti-racism is just a code word for anti-White.
cc,
If you start saying you had friendship with immigrants around here,
the “human refuse” haters will jump on you in a second.
Still, I understand that era...
And all nations are destroyed by immigration.
Employers love to blame Americans for turning up their noses at hard work, forcing them to hire immigrants to fill jobs... but the reality is Americans have never turned down work. They’ve been driven out. And not just in construction.
When I was a teen working at a nearby fast food joint, we were all middle-class American kids trying to earn money to buy a car. That same fast food joint is now staffed by middle-aged immigrants with iffy English skills.
Immigrants are simply a more attractive labor pool to burger barons. They don’t go to school, so they’ll work ten-hour shifts. They’ll work the 24 hour drive-through. The owner doesn’t offer a manageable part-time job anymore — it’s a sweatshop career, take it or leave it.
Thousands of occupations are similarly entirely immigrant driven, and we’re supposed to buy that it’s our fault? Because we’re lazy? Oh, and if you oppose letting more immigrants in to keep the hotels in Vegas clean, you’re just a lazy American racist.
You would think this would be the last job anybody would want,,Sewage-treatment workers earn an average of about $42,000 a year, a figure unchanged since 2001. Los Angeles pays a starting salary of $71,000 for similar work.
The other union, Local 3 of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, declined to discuss the status of its effort. It represents two categories of workers at the plants, including the plant managers, who have not seen a cost-of-living raise since 1995 and make an average of $59,600 a year less than many of the people they supervise.
