Republican favourite Mitt Romney is seeking to upgrade to living in the White House.

But if that fails the former Massachusetts governor has plans to quadruple the size of his $12 million California home.

The 64-year-old has filed an application in San Diego to bulldoze his 3,009-square-foot oceanfront mansion in La Jolla and replace it with an 11,062-square-foot property.

A campaign official said that the GOP hopeful, who has five married sons and 16 grandchildren, was planning the expansion as the home he bought three years ago 'is inadequate for their needs'.

The 75-year-old house, which has two bedrooms, will be replaced with a two-storey dwelling.....

How can a 3000 sq ft home be inadequate for him and the Mrs?

That’s weird. We have a La Jolla here in California, too.

Oops. I didn’t see that they called it his California home in the previous sentence. Crap.

I think he’s gone out and bought a house in every state so he can claim “favorite son” status.

Did you see the pix? I’d bulldoze, too!

Obviously, oceanfront property in LaJolla that runs into the millions isn’t going to have its value based on the house, but on the property which likely has breathtaking views. Anyone who bought that property was going to bulldoze an old 2 bedroom 3K house.

How does a 3,000 sq ft home have just 2 bedrooms?

Seriously, good luck to Romney getting through the red tape with the coastal commission, epa and others. On the upside he might create or save a few jobs with this project. More jobs than Obama.

Ah. Class Warfare. I’ll pass.

I hate Mittens as much as anyone else on policy issues, but if the dude wants to bulldoze that ugly dump for something better, I’m sure there are construction firms in CA dying to get a paying gig in this economy. Who cares what he does with his own money?

What I said was that whoever bought THAT property was going to bulldoze the existing house and build something much grander. My guess is that it’s a pretty large parcel of land that’s probably been owned by one family for (at least most of) the 75 years the house has been there, with maybe some probate/family feud issues that kept it from being replaced much sooner than now.

The Romneys have a large family. I don’t know why anyone would begrudge their buying this property and fixing it up to suit them and their family. He’s come by his $ honestly as far as I’ve ever heard.

A 3009 square foot “Mansion?”

My home is bigger than that and certainly is NOT a mansion.

I guess the LSM strikes again with their lies and truth destruction to try to paint a Republican in a bad light.

Does this construction require the approval of the California Coastal Commission? If so, those bulldozers might not be needed for a very long time.

Did everyone complain about this?

http://www.businessinsider.com/glenn-beck-texas-house-2011-6

Beck spent nearly $4M for a nearly 8K sq ft house in TEXAS. Not on the ocean. Just an upscale community.

Other than its being in CA (politically... tho LaJolla is definitely the R part of CA) I’d say Mitt got the better deal.

He got his money in telecommunications. In truth, 12,000 isn’t that egregious of a home for California.

I certainly hope that everyone here realizes that the timing of this story is to deflect the Obama “Let them eat cake” Million Dollar Vacation with the beautiful people.

That being said, Romney is as dense as a brick if he thinks the Media wouldn't jump on this to prove their Rich Republican meme.

As to the people here asking why he needs such a big house, if he is paying for it with his own money it's none of your business. With the brood he and his Wife have raised, my guess would be that it would be nice having a vacation house that can hold the entire clan at one time.

And no, I am not a Romney fan. However, if he is the last man standing when the Primaries are over, he gets my vote.

Sorry, but it's ANYBODY BUT OBAMA for me. Remember, there will be at least two openings on the Supreme Court that will affect the future of our Republic for generations to come. This is an all or nothing Election, period.

BTW - Did anyone hear Moochelle talking about taking the simple Family Vacation and eating Lob-stUr? That was a hoot.
