Lucifer’s Hammer should be required reading so people can get an idea of how things could quite possibly go. Enclaves where if you didn’t contribute something worthwhile, you and your children were left to starve, ad hoc armies cobbled together moving from place to place, eating, raping, pillaging, recruiting at gunpoint, no government to stabilize a thing...strong stuff.

I keep scratching my head over whether the anecdotes really do denote a serious uptick in mob/ethnic/caste violence, or whether it’s just a gathering of statistical norms into a scary presentation. At least 50% of the anecdotes are just popular repeats of the same limited (albeit outrageous) events.
Hard to tell. There’s always a distressing collection of stories from a nation of 300,000,000+ people. OTOH, life under cultural breakdown continues on more-or-less “normal” for most. Reality rarely matches the scary depictions we’ve internalized.
