The last Space Shuttle just took off from Kennedy Space Center in Florida. The mission crewed by NASA astronauts Chris Ferguson (commander), Doug Hurley (pilot), and mission specialists Rex Walheim and Sandy Magnus will deliver supplies, logistics and spare parts to the International Space Station.
Along with bringing stuff up for the space station, Atlantis will be bringing the first iPhone into space to help with some experiments during the 12 day mission.

I have a feeling this is the last time we send people into space.

Worse, if any Americans go into space we will have to beg rides from the Russians (and, soon, the Chinese).
You got it.
Even more so, look for private companies to take up the slack.
I bet we are funding a BIG part of Russia’s space program right now - all the Russians have to do is sit back and count the cash!
It’s going to be a few years before SpaceX can carry passengers to the ISiS, the Moon, or to Mars because they have to get the Falcon 9 and the Falcon 9 Heavy man-rated. This isn’t going to happen until around 2014.

“Rated” by whom?
Top three iPhone experiments on the Shuttle:
3) Evaluate AT&T network in low earth orbit.
2) Ensure can still stream Pandora while over North Korea.
1) Do Angry Birds fly the same way in a zero-gravity environment?
As long as men agree to obey the rules of The Federation.
Funny thing is. If we did meet another race in deep space. There’s a good chance that, WE would be the Klingons.
;-)
“look for private companies to take up the slack.”
The private companies will have to compete with the Russians, Chinese, Japanese, and Indians.
The private companies will get most of their money from FedGov, unless someone finds a way to make a buck in LEO other than trucking sats up.
Probably a board of NASA and FAA officials more than likely.
JFK ramped up our space program and Obama grounded it. How fitting. There’s got to be a good campaign ad there somewhere.
The more that get involved, the better.
