Conservative commentator George Will did double duty today, first defending the Constitution from those who believe the document was intended to be interpreted flexibly, and then later on This Week, also delivering a message much less likely to be cheered in some conservative circles. Will argued that it is impossible for the deportation of all illegal immigrants in the country to ever be considered a realistic solution.
Will believed that if the borders are secured, then and only then, could a non-politicized discussion take place about what to do with the illegal immigrants currently in America. If there are 11 million illegal immigrants in the country, Will explained why its impossible to think rounding them up could ever be possible:
To deport them would require not just police measures we would never tolerate. The majority have been here five years or more, theyve had children here, their children are citizens. But to depart them would require a line of buses bumper-to-bumper extending from San Diego to Alaska. Not going to happen. And as soon as people come to terms with that, then we get on to settling it.
Given that a secure border is not a weird aspiration, Will argues Americans are not xenophobic and merely just want security. Unfortunately, such a common sense, middle of the road approach probably seems out of reach given how highly politicized the immigration debate always gets.

Perhaps your on to Obamas evil plot? Make the US worse than mexico and they will all leave!
Oh yes, I am in complete agreement with your comments.
George Will does not consider that if it were impossible to find employment in America, they would leave under their own accord. The other requirement to end the illegals is to seal the border with boots on the ground. Once they leave, they will have to stay there.
Here’s how you do it Georgie boy. You make it illegal for employers to hire them. You stop any kind of welfare benefits to non-Americans. You demand a voter I.D. for them to vote. You do not count illegals in our national census. You do not allow illegals into our schools. You put a massive fee on all money being sent “home” from Los Estados Unidos. YOU MAKE ENGLISH THE NATIONAL LANGUAGE and stop all this multicultural language crap. If they can’t speak English, tough! You do this and you won’t have to deport them. They’ll go the hell home on their own.
They are not illegal aliens, they are documented citizens of a country other then the U.S.A., which makes them foreign nationals who have illegally crossed the border into the U.S.A. Their children born in the U.S.A. should be foreign citizens born in the borders of the U.S.A., not American citizens because the parents did apply to immigrate or to become citizens. After all, the children of Americans born abroad are still American citizens they are classified as American citizens born abroad rather then natural born in the land of their parents’ citizenship. It is totally irrational for a child not to have the same citizenship as the parents which in some cases would be dual citizenship until the child is old enough to choose one over the other. It seems cruel, invasive and imperialistic to separate a child citizenship-wise from the parents, it seems completely unnatural. After all who your parents are by birth or adoption is permanent while where you are born is transient, especially in this day and age.
” Don’t need to deport them. Stop giving them jobs and free government checks and they’ll go home of their own volition. It’s happened everywhere it’s been tried. “
Now there’s a fact worth running with. Otherwise, forget the “Trail of Tears” and “Moses in the Desert” images of deportation by the US government under either party. Reality needs to count somewhere in this calculation. The criminals are going to be the first to go. The working people who are illegal have a case against the US for their own negligence and for failure to enforce, allowing these people to bear and raise children who are now shop keepers and know no other country.
A ridiculous concept to marginalize one’s own voice with some radical proposition that will never happen.
Exactly.
Will is right - we can't deport them all. He's wrong though in his implication (I assume he is doing this intentionally) that there is no point in trying to control illegal immigration. George Will was once a great writer and a proficient thinker; it's sad how far he has fallen.
There are a lot of stupid “smart” people who live inside the Washington, DC Beltway. The liberal/socialist/communist culture there corrupts absolutely and it is RELENTLESS.
If we seal the border, stop the giveaways and enforce the laws on the books, the illegal immigrant issue will take care of itself.
I wonder what this nations economy would look like if these 20-30 million illegals weren't here? Instead, both Republicans and Democrats promote the illegal population for one thing and one thing only, current and future votes.
It makes me sick when I see our elected politicians concerned about political power rather than the legal citizens they're supposed to represent.
“institute Mexicos illegal alien laws.”
You mean!
;-)
For any unfamiliar with how Messico deals with the Guats and others trying to sneak into Messico, do remember that Messico has basically declared the border a free fire zone.
Cheaper to kill ‘em, and Messico has always been cheap when it comes to human life. It goes all the way back to their cannibal days of glory.
At least today’s Messicans are not eating their “others”. Cutting them up alive, burning them alive, ad nauseam - YES!
So far, no cannibalism.
But there is always tomorrow.
The conservative movement will be better off when George Will assumes room temperature.
I can’t stand Will but he’s right. Put 100 illegal Mexicans on buses. How many busses would it take to transport them across the border. And how many troops would have to be on the border to make sure those millions don’t come back across. I know I wouldn’t want to be anywhere near the border when their put off the bus. And I don’t know what the answer is.
Attrition thru enforcement works. Will is an idiot when it comes to immigration. He is a pro-amnesty advocate who offers the phony choice between mass deportation and a blanket amnesty. We tried an amnesty in 1986. It doesn’t work.
Let’s start with the illegal immigrant at the top.
We’ll even give him choice, that’s how pro-choice we are:
Kenya or Indonesia!
Will should stick to rhapsodising about baseball. He’s completely out of touch with the national political mood.
“But do you deny medical treatment
for a serious illness, heart attack, auto accident for anyone, including illegal immigrants?”
Correct answer is:
Do unto the Messican illegal what Messico would do to an American who wanted free ANYTHING in Messico.
Attrition thru enforcement.
Everyone on the panel agreed with “securing the border”. Why isn’t this happening?
